I would seriously pick them up of the price is right. I heard them back in the early late 70's/early 80's when they were out. With the right amount of power......good God.

That is a very good system to have if the EQ that comes with it is working. Really tightens up the bass and improves the overall sound!

I've got a pair of original D's. Bought them new in 1978. They will (can) absolutely shake your homes foundation! I had a pair of LaScalas and was always amazed at the difference in bass...the LaScalas would punch you in the chest but not go so deep...the D's would shake the foundation yet not punch you in the chest. My fix to that was cranking both up together! Schlepped both pair of them off to college and had one of the more wild systems in my dorm :music:

Seems the manual is available... I've got one scanned I can send if you ever need it. Though it's for the original, not the II.

They also came with a little plug you could swap out on the bottom if you wanted to biamp them. (I still have those too, though never used them)

One thing to note... my understanding and experience is, the woofers need new foam about every 10 years. I also understand that you can't get this done by EV anymore, though I've read here on this forum that there are others who can take care of that.

I really wish they used something different that didn't disintegrate like that.

Do the II's have the little light bulb tweeter protector in them?

There is a pair of D's currently on ebay, unless that is what you are buying. I must admit I've thought of nabbing them myself just to have another pair.

Good luck with them, post some pictures back here for us to see.

Kelly (kfa888) has a pair of E-V Interface speakers that he absolutely raves about.
From what I know about him, if he's that impressed, they must be pretty darn good.
Get them.

I'd like some thoughts on this, too. There are some good authorized pro speaker repair facilities around here, and I imagine they can handle the pair of EV 12"ers I need re-edged.I'm curious about going with an accordian cloth edge and being done with it(for my lifetime, anyway!) But when I start that project:scratch2:...it'll be another thread,I think. Myself,I like the EV stuff, too. If the price is right..... Get 'em!

Go with foam, cloth surrounds will change the sonic characteristics of the speakers and not for the better. New foam surrounds otter be good for at least 15 years, probably closer to 20.

Kinda what I figured.Oh well.I knew it would change the characteristics of the driver.I wasn't going to try it in an existing speaker assembly.More like I'm fishing for info and pitfalls to avoid in a future project. Hopefully good quality surrounds will go 15 to 20 years like you said.Sure does seem a shame that these gave up so fast, though.

I agree. It kinda sucks when my LaScalas have original drivers in them (bought new in 1979) and I've already fixed my woofers on my EV's twice (again, bought new in 1978). Prior to Al Gore inventing the internet, I put off fixing them because I was under the impression that EV didn't do that anymore and couldn't find much information on the subject. Today at the office, I've got an email from someone that evidently, can do it. I too, hope the fix lasts longer than 10 years.

Not to get this moved to Dollars and Sense but what's the fair price range? I'll be selling some rare and unique SOTA's(my avitar):tears: to acquire the EV's. Some other gear (Audiolab amp etc) comes with them for under a G'note.
Also are the foams a size that is only made for that driver and availiable through EV? I've refoamed some 12" and 15"ers before. Can rubber be used?

The speakers and EQ are mine! I'll be picking them up this week!
The fella said the D's have been put away for years. They will need the foams done and I hope they are as easy as others I've done! Is there any other things to look for with these? I want to totally go through them. My wife is gonna $hit a brick! To big to hide anywhere!:D

Congrats dude, i have mine coupled to a sx-1980, one of the few receivers IMO that let these bad dogs do what they can

EV's rule.... Sentry IIIs here in the house - can hear them CLEARLY down the block. Get some power to them and you will be HaPpY.

I've got an interface D to bring down the low bass but havent hooked it up yet.

Mine sound good as is... EV = SUPERB

Cheers,

Bob

Mine are EV interface 3's. Really not a high end speaker, simple vinyl covered cab, 8" 2 way with a passive and the nice Super dome tweet. But for basically a simple 8" 2 way they are surprisingly good. Very sweet, nice bass (no EQ for these / didn't originally come with one), well balanced, nice top end. Overall a surprisingly good speaker.

i would love to one day get the higher end ones.
