There is a seller near me with a Emotiva RPA-1 amplifier that I am interested in trying out. How is does compare to my Adcom GFA-5500?

Also, I have read somewhere where the rpa-1 is ran in Class H and that it is a dual mono design. Is this true?

Hard to compare completely different class amplifiers with different specs...and the sound is very much dependent on the speakers and room. I've owned a top end Emotiva A-A/B and the RPA-1 (not the 2) for years, all since new. They sounded very similar with my Snell towers and/or bookshelf's with the Class H RPA being a bit silkier. When everything is cranked, going nearly all out (1-2 o'clock dial) the XPA provides a little more sound stage and punch.Although they sounded great, sent the RPA and RSP to EMO for to replace caps and more at the 15 year mark just because I like them sounding and operating perfectly. Originally, I used 2 RPAs. One to bi-amp each Snell tower. Sold one for the XPA-5. I would likely part with the XPA before letting the RPA go unless a good offer arose for the matched RSP/RPA pair. They also have a very distinguisihing look with blue meters, the stainless panels and the rare top-hat controls. Personally, I remain a fan of great Class H design. It's not simple and it costs more the D and A/B to do it right in the audiophile class and EMO did it right!
