Enclosures for my TD15Ms Build thread (aka build this years AKfest MDF monstrosity)

Great work, Dave. I love / hate mdf. Cuts like butter and leaves talcum powder dust everywhere for years to come. I think the only way to clean my work area at this point is with a leaf blower like Bill Murray in Caddyshack. I thought that was ridiculous at the time. Now I'm not so sure..... :D

That's a lot of work, are you certain on the box size??? The reason I ask, is that when I built mine, in a much simpler standard box, I made a mock-up test box out of mdf that I could tune by moving the rear panel in and out. The mdf is cheap enough that I decided to use a throwaway box, ( well, I gave it to Keg :D ) before I would commit to the volume I wanted.

The easier design was to make it deeper than needed and then you could slide the rear panel in and out to see how different volumes actually sounded, and actually tune it through a range of sizes for the most pleasing sound. True, there would be resonance and reflection issues from the lesser, unbraced box, but it would give you a real world feeling for the "best" size.

Just saying... :yes:

Why would you do this? Modelling programs such as Unibox have always given very accurate measured results for me so I'm not seeing the need for a variable enclosure size for a given driver. Port tubes can be friction fitted or temporarily held in place with Blutak and Z measurements run to tune them exactly upon completion of the enclosure very easily.
 
Brett Andy wasn't necessarily coming from a technical side of the situation but from
the subjective side, meaning that different sized boxes and tuned to many different
frequencies can and will change the entire tone of the driver, so Andy was trying a
few different things to see if one configuration turned out to be more pleasing then
another might have been. (while at the same time using box modeling software)

Myself yah get the box the size I see fit depending on the specs an tune from there.
(Andy was just going a bit beyond an seeing if anything was a "sound" improvement)
 
OK, I know when I built mine, I just wanted to make sure before I committed to building.
I didn't want to get one built only to find out that it was lacking and perhaps I should have gone a few inches bigger.
Like most other stuff here, there probably isn't all that much difference between 4.9 and 5.1 ft3, but it's nice to get a prototype test before building.

I guess it's the old carpenter's adage, measure twice and cut once :yes:
 
I didn't have a chance to do any work today, but did bring the unity down to size it up.

Gary,

The inside of the unities will be black, the outside veneered with the same ribbon sapele. Actually, the portion of the horn flair that transitions from 60 to 90 degrees might be sapele, as well.

Sometimes it can be hard to reconcile what you see on a graph with what you're going to hear. Some people can look at the graphs and know what the speaker will sound like. I've done enough speaker builds that I can generally do that. I'm sure Dave has too so it's not an issue for him. But unless you've built a gazillion boxes or you just have an inherent gift for visual-to-aural translation it can be educational and reassuring to build a test box so you can be sure that things sound the way you want them to.

Dave, I have a feeling you're going to kick Big Bob to the curb. That 2nd room is sounding more appetizing. :)

I'd missed that. I'll add it to the 'Danley' file I've been compiling for a decade.

and wonder if you built those or purchased them. And what the drivers are.
The mids are a semi custom version of a Misco driver, and the HF was either a B&C DE25 (as in mine) or the TAD 2001 at least in the Lambda version of the Unity.

Since you are down under, have you ever had the opportunity to hear Cowan's unity implementation? (I realize you could live on the other side of the continent, I was just curious)
