This thread is going on and on about how cheap the sp-fs52 are. Knowone is considering the electronics that they are using. Now I'm thing these are being judged a little hard. I've been in the hifi industry for 45 plus years and had some not so expensive gear and lots of very high end gear in my audio journey. I've owned Sonus Faber, JBL L300, Anthony Galos 3.1 and so many others. Now I'm not saying they are a high end speaker, BUT I bought a used pair for my bedroom system for my girlfriend. I also listened to them in my main rig. Which is pretty high end stuff. My system is mostly Bryston gear, preamp and Dac. The amp I used to listen to these on is pretty rare, and world class. That's all I have to say about that. While I know these were not designed for a high end system as such, I was curious on how they would perform on high end system. I have them about 7.5' apart and my listening position is about 10.5' away. All cables are all all from high end companies and some made from myself. I listen to anything from PF, jazz, blues, 70s..Kinda everything. No country!! Lol So anyway I started up my listening session with PF ( The Wall). The speakera we're smooth and fairly deep bass from 3 5.25" drivers. The midrange and highs were very well balanced. Nothing seemed to stand out or EQd. The top end was a tad rolled off which I liked. If your not going to high quality parts like a tweeter. Then it's better to roll it off a tad. Better rolled off then bright! Jazz, sounded musical and engaging but I did feel they sounded thin. Or at times. My total rig without spks is up there in several thousands of dollars. NO I'm not bragging, I'm just stating a fact, that's all. My bedroom system is just a vintage receiver and blu-ray. That's it! On that system they sound....well ok. But to be perfectly honest in my main rig they sounded closer to 400 or even 600. Dollar speaker. I'm actually using them as we speak unit I buy what I want. Getting back to the music. I played several tracks of acoustic guitar and while they did sound, unfortunately they fell short a little. The plucks from the strings were set back some. Not sure why but it was. The vocals remained pretty nice, smooth not forward or resested. The bass not where deep, for a speaker of this size and price point. For me It was ..well satisfying. Vanessa Fernandez (Here but I'm gone) sounded nothing short of fantastic. I guess I should have mentioned this was listen to through Tidal then sent to 3k DAC. I also switched over to Spotify which we all know is mp3. But again the sound was not as good but for the entry level guy getting his feet wet into audio there is nothing wrong with these speakers. Now usually speakers are the most important part of any high fi system, I don't see any reason for these speakers to be paired with a little bit better electronics. Not a cheap Sony, or others alike. Because if you do, you won't be happy. There is plentiful of reasonable price gear out there that would sound good on these speakers. Adcom, some rotel, even some oder Hafler amps from the 70s and 80. I really don't think that would be an overkill for the pioneers in discussion. I can't tell you how much there were new but my guess is around $300 bucks give or take. I cannot see how any complain about these speaker for the given price. Before my test I added some polly fill to the inside of the cabinets and placed them on spiked stands. People forget the most important thing about any speaker. It's called synergy.
