Enter the Giant Slayer - Andrew Jones Pioneer Speakers

At a lower price than the BS22, on sale, I'd say the B652 AIR from Dayton beat them out. At the retail price I think they lose to the BIC DV62SI. Same with the towers. At the sale price the Pioneer towers get beat out by the Dayton T652 AIR's. Retail the BIC DV64's sound better, to me.

Wet means the sound is liquid.
Dry means the sound is sterile.
 
I'm curious to hear the BS22s. Not curious enough to buy a pair, though. Maybe someday we'll cross paths.

The best thing is that most new speaker value drops like new cars do. One can get a lightly used better speaker for the same price as new. Hopefully with a lot better cabinet quality.

I suppose beauty Is in the eye of the beholder. For instance the old Boston Acoustics A100 speakers look like complete trash to me, and I’m a former owner.

BTW, in addition to besting the Paradigm Monitor 7 V3, the Pioneer SP FS52 are better sounding than the old A100. But if you prefer the 70’s wide cabinet with “vintage” wood, there’s plenty of old timers trying to get rid of ‘em. YMMV.

Wood does not have to be vintage to look nice. Vinyl just looks like **** as it ages, no exceptions. Look at how handsome Polk units with real wood are.
 
Hmm, in my haste I put the quotes on the word vintage, instead of wood. I was mocking the Boston Acoustics A100 because they are not actual wood so much as some kind of MDF. And the wood finish looks like ****. That was an inept decision by bean counters at Boston, no doubt. And they sound like ****, but at least there is some consistency there.

Technology has certainly marched on, I guess. You shouldn’t be surprised that a modern pair of speakers that can be had for under $200(SPFS52), thrash the ancient A100. And if you want looks too, then you need to quit buying cheap vintage crap and save your pennies.

HUH? Dynaco A 25s "cheap vintage crap" keep talking out of your ass.
 
I bought a pair of the FS52s towers from Pioneer in early 2017. They were on sale and the shipping was free. I had read all of the hype about them and I thought that for the money I would give them a go. I had them in my main set up for over one and a half years. I really tried to like them and to be frank I was never overwhelmed with them. They were moved to my basement HT and have yet to be connected.

Oddly enough, I also have a pair of the BS-21s that were installed in my vacation home in Fraser CO. They were the rear speakers in the HT set up. The installer choose them at the time. I may hook up the FS52s as fronts and use the BS-21s as rears in the basement HT.

I dunno; I'd put the build quality - assembly, fit, finish - of the Pios, Sony CSS Cores, likely many others - up against the veneered chipboard and tarred A25s any day.
 
I just bought a pair of the Pioneer BS-22’s to use on a TV setup we have in our loft. They are sensitive to placement - especially distance from the rear wall.
Your ears also have to be below the tweeters or you get some suck out. Tilting them back 10 to 15 degrees seems to help the imaging. I’d say they are very good for the money and really benefit from a little tweaking.

I will say the Infinity Primus 150 supplanted the Pioneers in my computer setup. I'm sure Mr. Jones would agree that the Pioneers are good speakers, but that there are better for more money.

I do think that the success of the Pioneer has inspired many other speaker mfr's to 'up their game' by showing that there's a markiet of inexpensive quality speakers.

On another subject, speaker build quality has certainly improved since the day of the Dynaco (whether it's the use of MDF or Poly caps or bracing, etc) which isn't the same as saying one can't prefer the sound of the Dynaco's. Frankly, for better or worse it's what this group is all about.:rolleyes:
 
Oh certain vintage speakers that sound great, far better in fact than the Pioneer AJ designed stuff like the Small Advent were indeed built very poorly. The Dynacos are not in that category however. Now I have a set of Pioneer CS 88s that are true furniture grade cabinetry. Anybody can come and stop buy and lift them, inspect them etc and try and tell me some cheapie vinyl covered stuff is built better. Cheap speakers are built cheaply for the most part....new and old. I would still have a veneer covered cheap speaker rather than a vinyl covered one, hands down.

Evidently some people think all old speakers are built of pressboard and that is laughably ignorant. And they also think that all pressboard is the same grade.....another joke on them.
 
Looking at a pair of BS22s right now, one to either side of my monitor. Got them super cheap back when they were all the buzz. Did the full mod with upgraded tweeters, damping, and new crossovers. Have been very happy with them since then - well suited for their purpose (computer sound, iTunes, Youtube, etc).
 
I have the BS-22's and the Dayton B652 Airs. Got the BS-22's on sale at Best Buy for $100. They both play in my study on a rotating basis. Love them both!
 
Replaced the bedroom BS22 speakers ( shown in my former post ) with a smaller pair of Overnight Sensations The OS speakers are superior in every way.
