Epi 100's or KLH Model 6

The EPI in a floorstanding tower (perhaps mltl or tl) with an L-pad on the tweeter.

If the EPI tweeter has a level control, that's a great thing.

Otherwise the KLH. They're very natural sounding.

As is: KLH Model 6.

I agree on the EPI tweets. I do not care which gen. I have a pair of Genesis 100's that I do not foresee leaving my inventory. I also have a pair of M50's I reconstructed from a box of rubble. The Gen1 tweets are more organic to my ears, I rotate in different series, currently running them with the gold rings in my office setup with a Visonik David sub.

TO ME they are one of the few vintage sleepers that live up to their hype.

FWIW the 6's/5's are good performers and their bass and natural sound were appealing. They are gone and the EPI's stayed.

If I was going to buy 1 of the 2 sets today, I believe I would buy the KLH's. Both are enjoyable
reproducers but (at least in the Chicago area) the EPI's are much more plentiful than the 6's.
Get the KLH now and add the EPI"s later.
 
never seen an epi,i have owned a few klh model 6 and the ones i have now are best i ever heard,i wouldnt even hesitate..model 6 is massive in volume,pureness.punch..clarity..everything..and tweeters tell every intricate detail too..epi../ i dont hink so..model 6 for sure..need about 30 watts i think it said to power them good.......
 
Yup, those are the ones I went with. A lot of time has passed since the inital post, and as of this writing 1 of the tweeters is out. The seller had replaced the caps, and re-doped it.
Now, I'm not disputing their sound, (wonderful in fact) however, I noticed a considerably loud low end, not quite bass, dare I say, almost muddy.
I paired them and 1-2'd them with a pair of Genesius 110's, (another Human Speaker, lik EPI) but they are known for their highs. So I took turns pairing them and compairing them with Marantz Imperial 6's, JBL 4311's, even a sett of 1968 H.H. Scott speakers I found at a yard sale.
The 6's were always considerably more muddy.
Maybe I should replace both the tweets as long as I gotta do the one...o_O
 
The weakest link in the KLH is the tweeter IMO. The wire nuts used for connecting the wires also come loose causing a loss of the tweeter.

Where the EPI's tweeter is legendary. Now I wounder what a mixture of the two speakers would sound like?

I once heard some 6s which had had the tweeters replaced with KEF T27s. They sounded very nice, though I had some doubts about the T27s ability to survive long with a low crossover point. The EPI tweeter would be a better choice in that regard.

Yeah, and I've only been hunting for them for a week and already found a few pair now it's just a matter of price, but $50 for the pair seems the current rate.
At least they're obtainable!
 
Fifty bucks for a pair of EPI tweeters? I've sold pairs of the speakers for less than that -- much less. Maybe I need to move my collection to the upper midwest...
 
I've forced myself to keep my model sixes on the floor for the first week, but now that week is done and i want stands.

Seeing as i can build them, any recommendations? Thinking something 10"ish with a slight slant?
 
I have always preferred 6's off the floor. My 5's are on stands that are 6" and a slight slant. When I had 6's I tried them in a myriad of configurations and heights and found that they were best about 8' -12' apart depending on the room and off the floor 6" - 12". They sound good even with low powered amps but come up a notch with amps over 30 watts per. Enjoy!!!!
 
Just an FYI-The Six was specifically designed to be a floor stander, stated in the owners manual.
Mine are currently horizontal at ear level when sitting, and they are fantastic oriented this way as well. The bass is outstanding, not muddy at all.

That's why i kept em on the floor for a week. Wanted to get a feel for the intent. They're on the stands in the model 35, so it's not quite blasphemy...
 
I've owned a pair of 100V's for about 4 years now. I sent them off to college with no. 2 son about a year and a half ago. I missed them immensely.
A few weeks ago I picked up a pair of 6's at an auction. One sounds superb, the other sounds as if the surround needs to be re-doped, but still sound good. My 100's came home a few weeks ago and a quick comparison says to me that the highs are a little brighter on the EPI's and the bass is better on the 6's. Need to figure out a way to set them both up, but that may require a second system upstairs. Both are keepers to me.

Why choose between them? I have re-capped, foamed/gooped Model 6s and a pair of restored Genesis Is (from AK'r LeeSonic). The are completely different animals, with the 6s being very relaxed and a little rolled off on the top end and the Genesis brighter up top and more detailed. That Genesis tweeter is special, and the bass is no slouch either, but is no match for the Model 6s. Running them side x side lets you have your cake and eat it too. The Genesis Is pick up on the top end where the 6s leave off, and the 6s give you that nice big, well defined bottom end and over all very smooth sound. Hooked up to low powered cap-coupled receivers, this combo is very sweet!
