Epi M100 - "Fully restored"

Any opinions on these? I have read some past comments dating back 7 years ago or so.

They are asking 200, I can probably get them for less through negotiations. My question is, should I pursue these and what would be a fair price?

It looks like the seller has spruced them up, but not necessarily in a good way. The tweeters are the original masonite version and were not originally white. It looks like they were painted white and black. If he got paint on the diaphragm, the sound will not be correct.

The woofers don't look right. I cannot tell from the fuzzy pic if they are are original or not. The original 100 cone is paper (either blue or black) and normally has a matt finish, not shiny like in the pic.

If the tweeters have paint on the diaphragms and woofers have been modified or not original, i would look elsewhere. The magic of EPI speakers are the drivers. Mess with the drivers, you mess with that magic. I have 5 pairs of EPI speakers (70, 100, 120B, 150, and 20+) and I like that magic.

Agreed. Looks like they painted the actual speakers. Weird. I'd pass.
 
On my pair of Masonite EPI tweeters the surround area is red. If the roll on that were painted it could, probably would, affect the tweeters' performance. As currently configured the only parts possibly of value are the cabinets.

And unless you really like that dark, high gloss wood finish, those cabinets are not worth much.
 
I will get hold of the seller and ask what exactly he did to the speakers to "restore" and put the info on this thread, maybe it will shine some light on them...
I don't think (or hope) that he painted the speakers, it seems odd that someone would do this.
 
Looks like maybe Human Speaker replacements. And some creativity with the tweeters.

Some worthless refoam company in FL did on my speakers. They must have done such a sloppy job of regluing the surrounds they painted the yellow Kevlar woofers black. I was so pissed. Done back in the late 80s IIRC.
 
Brand new ones, just needing a refoam are unsold in Atlanta at 140. They advertised with the boxes and plastic wrap still in place.

Agree on the pass at that price. One of the great speakers of all time for sure, but there are lots of red flags on these. There are 2 different dust caps on the woofers. EPI used whatever was in the bin so it's not disqualifying. But the white racing stripes should get them posted on the "Questionable" thread for sure especially since the domes do look like the gen 1. The original drivers are critical.

Note also these have Epicure grill badges. The Epicure tweeter was a metal disk with a prominent logo below the dome.

Good condition EPI 100s can be had for $150-200 and they're fairly common. In fact a quick search shows at least 6 pairs on eBay in various conditions and states of originality. Used drivers of all generations come up on eBay pretty often. I put used drivers in 100V cabinets for $120 for all 4 and they sound awesome. Even new Human drivers are a little over $200.
 
I don't think the woofers match. I don't think the diaphragm was painted, just the coil. It does look very odd though. I can't imagine why they did it.
 
Update:

I spoke to the guy, we actually have about a dozen common friends.
Attached are the drivers he purchased off ebay. He states he only painted the surrounding part of the tweeter. Caps have not been replaced, but I think I can handle that.
I am running a SX 850 and Bose 601s. I am wanting to add a little more of the highs and lows to help with a little more depth of sound if that makes sense. I am always told no highs, no lows, must be Bose... HA!

And I may get them for around 100, he states hes short oncash... MAybe 125. No shipping we live near eachother.

I surely do not want to spend too much.
Maybe these won;t give mewhat I amlooking for?

Advice?

Around the concave part of the tweeter there is a small inward roll before it flattens out onto the frame. Considering my experience with this tweeter I think the roll is effectively a surround. It can move. If this inward roll is painted it might affect the tweeter's response. And I'm still not too sure about those woofers.
 
Those woofers are original. They've been re-foamed and a slightly bigger dust cap has been installed.
