Epicure EPI 1000 Speaker

Hello fellow AK’ers

Just acquired this MASSIVE speaker and just wanted to share with you all and ask a few questions

It’s over 6 ft tall
About 180+ lbs

My first question is why does it have to sets of speaker wire clips? There’s one at the top of it and one on the bottom

My second question is will running it on a receiver that only puts out about 16wpc harm it?

First, find the guy who refoamed the woofer and teach him how to drive a screw...:eek:

There are, I believe, drivers on 3 or 4 sides of the cabinet. Low power will not harm them if you don't try cranking them. So, don't try cranking them.

Go over to Human Speakers, may be good info there. Fun score! :thumbsup:

In regards to the refoam job: seriously, i was thinking the same thing, what the heck was this guy smoking when he did these?? Hahaha

And cool, won’t crank ‘em...again...like I did last night hehehe
 
To angelaudio - As a proud owner of fully restored Epicure Model 20's transplanted into 201 cabs, I am green with envy.

Give Hu a call at Human Speakers. These are truly some monolithic, epic speakers, and can hang with plenty of high end stuff, even today.

In a nutshell, THESE DESERVE A PROPER, COMPLETE RESTORATION.

You have a very good set, now do them right.

Onwardjames, you should only be HALF green with envy because I only have ONE :-( I wish I could find it a mate but judging from what I’ve read online these are rarer than mammoth bones...sigh
 
Bummer. I hope you can find its mate.

I guess the reason that there were two sets of input terminals was to make it easier to connect to your amp. I image it is easier to connect at the top if you are making frequent changes, although the bottom connection would probably result in shorter cables.

Human Speakers has a good page on rebuilding the EPI 1000.

Well, that sucks. I guess I missed that first go-around. However, It wouldn't be a HUGE undertaking to build another one. Drivers are available......just throwing that out there.

Yeah finding the pair would have been a major score. I called Hu, the Human speakers guy, and he said he sells the kit to build it (components only of course) and I’m considering it. I think it would be worth it
 
Being as you'll probably never find the other half of that speaker, personally, I would cut that speaker almost in half and make it into pair. Or, take all the drivers out and build, or have someone build, cabinets to house the drivers into correct cabinets. The crossovers on those are pretty simple, anyway.

Maybe make 2 pairs of either M100 or M150. Heck, it's just a simple 10uf capacitor on each tweeter.

What's to lose...

Great find, that is an awesome speaker. The two pair of binding posts allow you to position it to optimize the height of the drivers to the listeners ear level. So either end can be placed on the floor. Those speakers deserve a large room to display their magnificence. Low wattage amplifiers will work but will not do it justice. The speaker will easily handle over 500W/rms per channel. Definitely worth building a second if you cannot locate its original partner.

I hadn’t considered that option but it sounds like a good one! The speaker sounds amazing on its own so I can just imagine what they would sound like as a pair or two pairs in a quad setup

Bob, that’s a good idea too. But after avguytx’s suggestion I might just gut the massive cab and make me two pairs of m100’s or m150’s :naughty:

Ah indeed the wisdom of Mojo Warrior must be taken into account. I feel the same way, although cutting it up and making smaller pairs is tempting. The kit that Human Speakers sells to make another 1000 would probably take about the same effort and money to put together anyway.. decisions decisions :idea:
 
I agree in not cutting up the original just in case you got the wild hair to build a single from scratch. But, for the time being, simple 2-way enclosures are about the easiest thing ever to build.

@wlhd1610 M400's used 6.5" woofers....not 8".

Yes,
I'm well aware of that as I have two pairs of 400 mini-towers and probably a dozen other EPI models.
My point was 2 400 speakers stacked are roughly the same physically and can easily approximate the spl's of a single 1000.

That's wonderful. But after reading back over the post to see if I missed something, I just wasn't sure where the M400's fit into with what he had since they used smaller woofers.
