Epicure Model 2.0...any thoughts?

I'm going to look at a pair of Epicure Model 20 speakers this afternoon. I have not seen them yet but am assured that they are in great shape and the foam surrounds are intact. Does anyone have any experience with these and are they worth grabbing? The newspaper ad says they are 33" tall by 12" wide. I think they might be smaller than that. I cannot access the Human speakers website from work, but I might stop at home on the way to check them out. Any opinions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

They are model 2.0, not model 20, as I mentioned above. The seller did not see the decimal point on the label.

From the Human Speakers website:
Dimensions: 29" x 18 1/2" x 11"
Weight: 64 lbs
Response: 35 to 20k Hz
RMS Power: 20 to 100 watts (very conservative rating)
Crossover: 1800 Hz ACC 004 C
Driver complement: Two 8" woofers
Two 1" air spring dome tweeters
Impedance: 8 ohms
MSRP: 458.00 - 550.00
Built: 1976 - 80
I'd say they are definately worth a look depending upon the asking price. They appear to have 1 forward facing woofer/tweeter and a set on top.

Hello, I do not have any experience with these but I checked out the H.S. website for you. I could not find a model 20 listed but there is a 20 (+) listed. It's 29x18 1/2x12 3/4. There is a 2.0 listed that is 34x10 3/4x11.

Thanks guys. The gentleman on the phone told me Model 20, but they are Model 2.0, very nice walnut cabs that sit on a black cube. The upper cab is on some kind of hinge and they are tilted back about 5-10 degrees. They have a 8" passive radiator, a 6" woofer and a dome tweet. They are about 34" tall by 12" wide.
I did not listen to them, but the guy was the original owner and said that he just put them in the garage a couple of days ago because they bought new furniture and new "small" speakers. They were driven with an Onkyo receiver. The passive surrounds are butyl and are fine. The 6" surrounds are shot and need refoaming or replacement. I dropped them off at home and will hook them up later. The seller did not know about the surrounds until I pointed them out. He said they never listened to them loud.
The replacement woofers are $48 each at Human Speakers, but I'd have to send in the old ones. I'll see if they just need refoaming first.
If anyone has listened to these before, please chime in. All opinions are welcome. Pics to follow later tonight. BTW, they were asking $100 and I would have paid that if it weren't for the bad surrounds. I paid $60 for the pair. The Human website says that they were produced from 1979-86 and retailed for $710.

As promised, here are the pix. I'm going to hook them up tonight, but wanted to take photos before it got too dark in here.

They absolutely need to be refoamed before you listen to them. You're only risking major and permanent damage by playing them without surrounds. These are too nice of speakers to destroy the woofers on, if they're not already shot. If you must listen to them, at least lay them down with the woofers facing up to minimize the potential for magnet scraping (by taking gravity out of the equation).

The 3.0 is one great speaker.
The 2.0, the little brother is very nice, you stole that pair.

Well worth the refoam, but some here may help you get it done instead of having to buy new parts.

Carl, these are the correct specs from Human Speakers[HUMAN Speakers]. Same pictures at the website.

Get them refoamed and capped if needed, 5 caps per. You should be very pleased with your good find.

I have a pair but never knew about the boxes that they sit on..mine don't have them, and I don't think they lean back either (in storage right now). Unfortunately, I'm in the same boat as you...they need surrounds. Actually, I have the surrounds, I just haven't put them on yet. I'm also curious as to how they sound. All the other Epi speakers I've heard have been really nice.

Very nice sounding speakers.

For the record, these are the speakers to which I thought the OP had refererred:

I listened to them last night and all of the drivers work. They didn't sound bad at all, even without the surrounds on the woofers. I didn't turn them up, just checked to hear if they all worked. The seller has probably been playing them for years without the surrounds. They said they didn't play them very loud.
My question is how do I get them out of the cabinet? The tweet and the passive have screws exposed on the front. I cannot see how the woofer is installed. There are no screws that I can see from the front. Any ideas?

looks like beauty-bands around the woofers , missing from the passives. should pry
off w/ a thin knife or spatula .

Yeah, that is weird. A different woofer p/n, a pedestal on the bottom, and $300 more. :scratch2: I checked out the 140C's on the HUMAN site. They were a little earlier, production stopping in '81. That could be a part of the price difference.

I pried the bands off, but they were glued on. I can access the screws now. Also, in the photos, there was a foam facing on the entire surface behind the grills. That foam was rotted too. That's why there are so many bumps in the photos. I scraped it off with a putty knife and it came off easily. It's a little tacky, but I'm considering painting it black or covering it with felt. For the life of me, I can't figure out why the foam was there in the first place.

Mine have that same disintegrated foam, it's almost like that green stuff that my mother used to stick fake flowers in. Gross. I was going to scrape it off and use felt or even velvet. I'm sure it's probably there to break up reflections off of the face of the cabinet. My big DQ-30s have a similar material around the mid and tweeter. Therefore, I'm going to go the route of keeping something there to serve that function because speaker designers probably don't put something that costs money on a speaker unless they feel it's necessary.

Yeah, you're probably right...that's why I was considering felt. I was amazed at how easily it came off though.

One thing that I have found helpful in trying to roughly evaluate the condition of a foam-less driver, without the risk of playing them, is to apply light even pressure on both sides of the dust cap to see if the cones can make a full excursion without any scraping. If it scrapes, or I can't center it at all without it scraping, I won't buy the speaker.

Regards,

D-Ray

I took the pedestals off the bottom. They were attached with 2 long machine screws. The speaks look more like the 140C's now. I'm going to get them refoamed and possibly recapped, if needed.
D-ray, if the woofers are toast, I can get them rebuilt by Human speakers for $48 each. I think they are fine though.
