Epicure ???

gyusher

-don't go round hungry-
JUST LANDED A PAIR OF epicure loudspeakers not sure what the model number is as some fool covered them with silver formica. . . drivers look like new. . ./ 8in woofer and a single tweeter located just above the woofer center cabinet. . . The tweeter says "EPICURE" right on it. . . not EPI but the full word. They work super just look like crap. . . but for 6.96 who's complaining??

Take a look at some of the photos on the www.humanspeakers.com web site and you may be able to identify the model....

Alternately, post photos of the front and back, and someone at AK may be able to chine in...

Looks like a "150" near as I can tell. . . As I said someone recovered them (nicely done) with a "Dirty Silver" formica and used a silver grey fabric for the grills. The drivers look like new and they sound spectacular. . . I will try to get a pic or two later tonight. . .

Anyway I am happy. . .

oh man, that sure makes for a classy looking speaker. maybe something can be done to dress them up, but what it is escapes me. thanks for the pic's.

What's up with that tweeter level "knob"? Looks like a wad of (well, I'd rather not say). Scary. - Mark

Velcro. . . .Holds a cover plate. . . Nothing too good for these. . . :naughty:

Oh. :headscrat OK. - Mark

no. . .No. . .He cut a groove up the back behind the formica where the wire can be completly hidden. The cover plate is a small piece of that same formica that covers the hole. . it has a dab of velcro on it too. . .

Like I said. . .He spared no expense. . . They will suit me fine either in my computer room or in the garage. They sound great. . .Just look like ****. . .

Ah, that makes sense. But why? Oh, nevermind, he was sparing no expense, I forgot :D . Nice looking speakers - all things considered. - Mark

Formaldahyde for the person who formica'd them. I guess you can gut them, trash the boxes after you take the dimensions and start building new boxes for them. Are they worth it?

I have a better idea. . . I just use them as they are. . . I really dont care about pretty anyway. . . Sound however is what it is all about. These will most likely end up in the garage.

I could get some PE vinyl and recover the formica with a woodgrain vinyl. My wife can redo the grills in about 30 minutes. . . I think they will be just fine. When I get tired of them I will sell the drivers or just chunk the pair. . . I mean 6 bucks is not going to break me. . . .

Truth be known it was the unusual color that made me notice them in the first place. :scratch2:

EPI drivers fetch a nice $ for woofers and tweeters.

I agree about the sound. Close your eyes, and they all look the same.

Formica's not hard to take off, just use an iron (when your wife is out) :)

But are they actually wood underneath? Unless he did something silly like using epoxy to put the Formica on, heat should loosen the glue, a solvent will clean off the remains, and Vy-ola! A "new" look!

Better yet. . . :smoke:

TO me all EPI's always sounded the same. They almost all were the same - same drivers, crossover. Even over time, they made improvements, but they sounded the same. The bigger ones just sounded ... bigger. This wasn't a bad thing. They were some of the most listenable cheap speakers made.

I have two pair. One (I think they are later 150's) are on my test bench. Nice, but I coule use new woofers - I send all their bass to a sub because I've replace (reinforced) the surrounds with scotch tape (it has held for several years now). The others are 90's - the cheapest of the cheap. Since they are small, I could easily sell them on ebay but I've been holding on to them looking for a worthier recipient.

EPI's are very musical. The crossover is just right. The tweeter/woofer match is right. And like I said, they were always very low cost.

Boy are your's ugly! You could turn them into stealth speakers (like someone else did). Paint them the same as a room and get the grills to match too.

I think this is what someone did with these. When you see them in person you can see the effort this guy spent to do this. Actually he did a nice job. I think they might have looked much better when he first did this. . . Now the grills are getting old and the fabric has stretched out of shape.

I like the Iron thing but I like the PE vinyl thing too for a KISS makeover. . . Right now they do blend in well in my garage. . . You almost have to look for them. And they do sound nice. . .not great but very nice, keepers either way.

When I first saw these things I too wanted to lynch the guy but what the hell they were his to do with as he pleased. Somehow I do not think that the original walnut veneer is any good otherwise why. . .? ? ? ?

A change of pace for the ears, and nice sound for $7.00? Your wire is probably going to cost more than that. Forget the looks and enjoy the sound.
I see Soundesign speakers going for more than that, well, they are still on the GW shelf. :lmao:
