Epicure ???

Do you think the guy used 'em in the kitchen?
I think the Epicures are great speakers. I have the model 2 and the model 3 and they have a very musical presence and a good soundstage. Strong in the bass range but the midrange really stands out.

I know someone (this is a true story) here in MA who, until quite recently had EPI 1000's as his kitchen speakers :-) Driven by an MC225, to boot. Big guy. Big kitchen. No Formica, though.

The veneer on my 90's, although in good shape, is crap. Paper (plastic). The other EPI's I have are slightly better, but still crap. So formica would actually be an upgrade.

2 days of listening

Talk about an enigma (not enema. . . Got that when I bought them) these things do sound good.

So nice in fact I put them where my Bozaks were placed. Now after a couple days of listening to what music I have plus plain old FM stereo radio I am impressed.

They are very clean sounding, easy to listen for long periods be it low levels or moderate levels. I have them hooked to the mint LXI receiver I just bought, makes the receiver sound much more expensive.

I still cant find the exact model number as the box size (22/9/12) is not listed on the Human site.

In my application all you see is the black faces. . . that helps. . .

Oh, you got a set of very rare units in the optional finish. Some companies offered speakers in teak, Brazilian walnut, cork, contact paper, etc. but Epicure apparently went 1 better. With this information you can now offer them on eBay as rare and hard to come by speakers and get maybe 2x the going rate.

What is the going rate?? One thing about this speaker. . . If it was original and looked as good as they sound at least they can be shipped. . . Not too big and not too heavy. . . Just big enough and just heavy enough to be just right. . . I think they are 25-30 pounds each and 20x12x9 makes a nice package. . . .

Who knows I have seen weireder things on eBay that much is true. . .

I thought that the Epicure models had real wood veneer, as opposed to the EPI versions with vinyl. Sort of like a Cadillac vs. a Chevy (or a Lincoln vs. a Ford).

BTW, couldn't pass up a pair of EPI 100V's at a barn sale in my neighborhood this AM for $15. Boxes (albeit vinyl covered) were perfect. Most of my EPI's have been dump finds and cosmetically quite challenged. Nice to have a respectable pair. Foam on the woofers is intact but ready to disintegrate any minute. Passed up a pair of the later EPI Magus speakers (with rather suspect looking horn tweeters) for the same price.

Under this god awful formica is real walnut veneer, bottoms are not covered with formica and are nice walnut veneer. . . Did I say how good these guys sound??? I am sure the newness will wear off and I will be on to greener pastures but for the moment it is great. . . .

I am still not finished with my vintage JBL HT system but that is another story all together. . . .

Those do not appear at all like EPI 150s to me. Most of the 150s around have the plain red-brown inverted tweeter in a plain circular mdf mount as seen on their first inverted dome. The ratio of the cabinet size to the 8" driver on your Epicures also seems to be less than for the Epicure 150, and the color of your cone's paper is blue rather than plain grey with a black dustcap. Most of the 150s would have a black rubber surround that came with the first two incarnations rather than a grey foam (last or replaced). Under the formica on a 150 should also be brass inlay in four circles on the top, and verticle lines running up the edges on the sides. Here is an unbastardized pair. :)

Anyway, these speakers are an enigma indeed. As G. says, they sound nearly ideal in their balance and clarity. Simple won. That they were inexpensive in their execution created a situation where they could not be improved upon with potentially more profitable (complicated) designs. EPI had to try to compete in the market (as can be seen at humanspeakers) but I've not heard a better speaker than the 150 yet (with the smaller 100 getting 90% of the desired sound, just missing the some of the 38-40Hz range.)-sf

I was guessing about the model number going by what info I could gleen from the website. One thing for certain is how good these guys sound. I have been listening all morning to some good Blues that I have on CD. They amaze me at how clean and how strong they are on the bottom. Looks like the surrounds have been replaced with butyl rubber some time back. Actually the previous owner did good work just not to my tastes, except sound wise.

I did not think I would ever pull my Bozaks out of here but these guys are much cleaner on top and the bass is tight and about the same as the Bozaks.

Indeed. The tight bass without the need for exagerating a mid-bass (hump) seems to perhaps come from using an eight-inch in the correct volume acoustic suspension box? (That or perhaps the particular woofer characterisitcs that also achieves the target natural roll-off of highs without any crossover cap.) -sf

More Pics

I see the woofers are original. . . I thought they were but I had to be sure. . . . Way down inside the stuffing is the cross over. . .

That's an EPI woofer alright, watch out, the plates that hold the magnet are prone to unglue and slide/scissor, leaving a weekend project to correct. :) I see what looks like an inductor coil in there, if so they are not using the minimalist single-capacitor (10 uF) only. The subsequent GenesisI has an inductor if I remember correctly, so yours could be late model..... -sf

I noticed another thing. . . after closer inspection the case is vinyl. . . not walnut veneer as I thought. I was going to try the iron thing and remove the formica. I found a loose corner and I could lift the formica to see that no mistake it is vinyl covered. . . So removing the formica is not the answer but the PE vinyl is gaining ground. . . . .And. . . I think I have enough left over from my receiver days to get-it(R)- done. . .

New Life

I had some PE vinyl left over so I covered one of these babys. . .Lots of cleaning left and new grill cloth. . . I noticed PE has new stick on wood veneer for about 50 bucks. . .enough to do both speakers, I might do it with walnut. . .

GU, Wow. These particular EPI are interesting in the proximity of the tweeter. Seems like it might represent a development in "the module" if that is indeed an 8" woofer. Looking good. -sf

I have not seen another like it in all the Epicure/EPI pics that I could find.

BTW the woofers are 8-inchers.

Their sound is amazing. . . Great bass. . .better than my 12in Bozaks. . . . The adjustable tweeter levels are keen as well. I like em. . .

Bump

I seen this thread and decided to ask my question here rather than start a new thread. I am looking at buying a pair of these EPI 150's from a co-worker and I guess that I would like to solicit others' opinions about these speakers. I did a google search and cannot find any specs on these speakers, just replacement parts. Anyone with general info or specs? I would appreciate it greatly. :thmbsp:

The EPI 150 was the 100 in a bigger, nicer box (same drivers). Brass trim around the grills, and odd brass rings flush into the four top corners. Deeper bass than a 100.

EPI 150:
Dimensions: 25" x 15" x 11"
Weight: 30 lbs
Response: 35 to 18k Hz
RMS Power: 15 to 60 watts (very conservative rating)

EPI 100:
Dimensions: 21" x 11" x 9"
Weight: 25 lbs
Response: 45 to 18k Hz
RMS Power: 12 to 50 watts (very conservative rating)
