Equality for quality equalizers...

Mine's a lot better now that I had the chance to raid your stash of spare parts. Let's here it for the man ...

You showing up here made me feel guilty about not getting the thing where it belongs in the rack, so I went ahead and did the shuffle. I'd been holding off till I get my new amp built, but what da hey, eh. Here it is in it's permanent home.

Slider and lights replaced, and she's ready to rock. Only complaint, not that I got it set properly, I got all them controls to play with, and no reason to play with them ...

Rock on man! :) Looking good in the rack!

You even replaced the knobs, nice. Now its all original. Don't you love the feeling when all the lights work?

One would have to think that of the many different EQ's out there that the quality is probably as varied as numbered. In the past I use to enjoy making racks of specific branded gear so I would build a rack of all Phase Linear, or all SAE, or all Mcintosh. I have used and still occasionally use my EQ's if I am using one of those racks, and must say I enjoyed using them.

Both the SAE and the Phase Linear are parametric EQ's. I couldn't tell you what is inside of them as I have never had them apart, and I have no idea as to there quality compared to other makes, I just liked them because they matched the other gear in the lineup.

SAE

Phase Linear

But wait ... there's more!!

Here's the leftovers from my little experiment with equalizers.

Can't say I didn't give graphics the old college try ... <G>

I have GOT to start flippin' some of this stuff. <mutter mumble>

The Yamaha 2031 has to be possibly the worst EQ ever made......they are really awful sounding units, we used to call them the "fix one problem, create another" EQ....
Just my 2 cents from 30 years behind a mixing console, and tuning PA systems in the pro audio world.....

Good graphic EQ's

XTA
White Instruments
Klark Teknik (DN27 was my fav)
Urei
BSS

Good analogue parametric is the Meyer CP10.

Haha! Funny you should say that, I been forced to use that POS yammy for years as a monitor EQ. Feedback problems galore. :sigh: Guess it's not just me.

I do all of my EQ on the computer, which works for me because my computer is essentially my only source. Obviously all digital, as it occurs prior to the DAC. My thinking up until this point is that it is good to do it this way, as I avoid putting anything else in the analog signal path. I really don't have any point of reference however to be able to determine if a good traditional EQ would be an improvement or not.

Most equalizers fall into one of two categories, op amp and coil wound.

Op amp EQs have higher distortion levels but generally cost less.

Conversely, coil wound units generally have very low distortion but cost more.

I believe that a good coil wound EQ can help correct acoustic problems in your listening room.

This is where the AK purists begin heaping abuse on me. :D

No heapin here buddy. What are some examples of the different types brandwise and can you tell them apart without opening them up?

I'd say if done in the digital domain with proper software its probably the best choice.

By-pass the POS and enjoy trouble free monitors with no EQ.....They really are just the most awful units.....
I threw our last one in the dumpster some 20 years ago...seriously...

I've got a few EQ's laying around I stopped using years ago. Just out of curiosity earlier in the week I hooked one up to a vintage Phase Linear preamp and some other vintage gear I have laying around. It kinda hurt my ears a bit.....
