Equalizer suggestions? Will an EQ really make a significant audio improvement?

Unless you compare various phono pre's, you might overlook it. To my ears, they make a big difference. I really think you have to get past the cheap ones though. At the very least that IFI Zen one is good.

As a wild guess I'd say the phono stage on the JVC might be broken.

Art, has tried 2 different external phono preamps, as his AVR receiver has no phono inputs, so something else is clearly amiss.

No problem, I just thought you were directly referring to OP Art`s phono SQ issue, and missed that he had tried 2 different external active phono stages with no improvement.
