ESS Heil Tweeters on Sale

Damn, and I have 2 pairs of these in storage without HF drivers:

Guess I'll just have to Econowave them after all! :naughty:

My audio buddy will find this post interesting. He has a set of Yamaha ns-1000m's that he wants to add a pair of Heil's to.

ESS AMTs are one of my favorite drivers. IMO, they’re great for DIY and are a great value considering what they can add to a setup. I’ve enjoyed them in AMT3 “rock monitors” in the past and am now using a pair as super tweeters with DIY full range Stephens drivers.

Since I would also be using them with a full range single driver I'd be interested in how you're crossing them over.

Here's an old AK thread on the Great Horned Heils. Ed Schilling who once sold back loaded horns bi-amped the GHH with Nelson Pass Amp Camp amps.

Since the Heils have similar sensitivity to my Stephens drivers, I’m using a single capacitor to bring them in where the Stephens drivers start to naturally roll off.

Yeah. Thats a good price. I bought a pair maybe 4 years ago when Ricky was still there. Paid $140 each with shipping included and no sales tax. I was going to make a pair of Monitor cabinets, but was able to buy a pair of complete Monitor speakers and had them shipped to me. So the Heils were spared.
To use them, I got a pair of RS Nova 15's and cut them up and crammed the Heils in there. Added a ESS xover. Its a fill in speaker.

There were 8 ohm diaphragms in the 70s. They typically measured between 6 and 7 on your meter. the AMT 3 used them. they were in the Heil Elite cause thats an add on tweeter. I think there is too much fussiness about adding the Heil. You do need an appropriate crossover and a 1 amp fuse would be a good idea.

The people at the Klipsch Community are double stacking them in wave guide structures.

The speakers in my avatar are home-made add on Heil tweeters using an ESS bookshelf xover with a built in level control The woofer wires are just taped off. Xover at about 1000hz. Hooked up in parallel. It all works fine.

That Klipsch thread is pretty long. I used to visit there quite a bit years back. That's where I got put on the path to my tractrix mid-horns. Double stacking the Heil's may cut the vertical dispersion down however. Not sure if they measured that.

I was interested in trying to give them another shot as I like their look and bipolar nature but as reviewers with good measurements have shown through the years it costs as much in crossover over components as the driver itself to equalize them out to have a decent frequency response.

It is a long thread., Did you read the whole thing?? Did anyone there complain about vertical dispersion? I think their Heils are set up at chair height for listening. If you need them higher, raise them up. All speakers have dispersion limits. ESS provided a rubber foot that raised the front up a bit. They all seemed pretty happy with their double stacks.

Just not true. Depends on what you intend them for. I cross them over at 3KHz and even have a "HF boost" at 9kHz.

Ed Schilling explained to me that was one reason he went with a Boozehound active crossover and bi-amped his Great Horned Heils. Sadly Ed only sells the Truth preamp these days.

They sound awesome just the way they come, with out equalization. If you must equalize them, just so you feel good about the way they look on paper, buy the Dayton Audio mini DSP for $160.

IMO/E Great Heils are superb for treble. However, they are dipoles. The rear wave is 180 degrees out of phase with the front.

The basic design is good enough for everyone and their brother to start making their own Heil tweeters as soon as the patent ran out. They usually call them folded ribbon. No matter. If a tweeter appears to have a rectangular vertically folded surface, it's a Heil copy.

I wish at least one of those copycats would copy a Great Heil.

I guess I sort of pocked the bear…looking back at the measurements done on the Lansing forum by various contributors and those by Dennis Murphy of Philharmonic Audio show my experience with the driver ….sort of a pseudo response that reminds me of the JBL LE5-2 midrange driver. Flattening out the rising response to the 5k peak does provide nicer outcome though…a DSP would be a big help or maybe the RME dac. I must admit with work it’s fun to listen to it.
