Exchanging my Nak RX-202...any suggestions?

I've owned the RX-202 for about a year but it had problems from the time I bought it. The left channel went silent every now and then, but then it'd momentarily peak if I tapped on the deck or shifted it around during playback. Also it had this really annoying quirk when it got near the end of playing back some cassettes, the audio would start to warble... The pitch and speed were normal, but the vocals in particular were most noticeably bad, almost as if the artist was singing into an oscillating fan blade. It's as if the longer the tape was, the harder the motor had to work to push it forward. It didn't warble with every cassette, but tape length was the only common denominator I could see.

Anyway, I sent it in for repairs explaining best I could to the shop owner what the problems were. He seemed baffled at the whole warbling audio but took the deck in nonetheless. Weeks later I came back for it after he made his repairs; there was some electrical component near the front controls that had shorted out, but the warbling audio he said he couldn't really replicate in his benchmark tests; he resurfaced the pinch roller and we called it square. However, I took it home to find the warbled audio was still very much prevalent, and about a week later the left channel started cutting out again after very little playback... He took it in a second time and came to the conclusion that it was beyond repair, and fortunately gave me a refund.

I'm really bummed, since the reason I bought the deck was for its auto-reverse, but I suppose good-looks and convenience aside, I can settle on a slightly more conventional deck. I've been trying to research what I should go with next, best bang for my buck etc etc, but I'm honestly at a loss. I don't want to spend copious amounts of money on a legendary deck (i.e. I'm not buying a Dragon), just something that's got great playback quality and 3 heads. I'm not loyal to Nakamichi so I'm willing to look at any other reputable brand, but I'd love some suggestions.

Also, anyone interested in a clean-looking Nak deck? :P

Where do you live? Your capstan belt could not be as good as it should be, also. Idler tire. I doubt your cassette guy knows naks.

I'm in the Pacific Northwest! I dunno he seemed to know his stuff; he only works on vintage hifi equipment and talked to me in great length about my last Nak (DR-8). But hey, anyone who knows a thing more than me is an expert in my book. And that's not exactly saying much.

I suppose I could try another shop, but I'm also trying to weigh the pros and cons of keeping this big headache around at this point. I really would like a three head deck; it'd make recording a whole lot easier.

Im kind of a nak snob just because i know nak decks fairly well. so. :)You could try and find a 505, thats a very nice deck but $$$. Probably the best auto reverse deck ever made. Whats your budget?

Did your tech take apart the transport on your 202,new belts etc?

I'd love a 505 but you said it, that's silly money. I'd like to spend no more than $400 as long as the deck has been serviced.
He did not say anything about pulling apart the transport, the priority issue was that electrical short. To be honest he kinda seemed disinterested in the warbling. Maybe it wasn't worth the trouble to him?

Well dont take that guy anything else. :)
Your alleged SHORT is probably a dirty pot. That 202 is 30 years old and was probably sitting for 20 years. Pots gets dirty. Switches get dirty. They lose contact. Cause all sorts of problems. So if tech guy fixed your alleged short, why would it pop right back up again after you got it back?
The transport should have been dis assembled, cleaned, properly lubed. New capstan belt, new idler tire.
Think of a 30 year old car sitting for 20 years. Its not going to work properly without a service.
Anything rubber will be toast or near toast. Grease/oil will be dried up/hard.

A couple good decks for you to google are nak BX300 or Nak CR3. Those are great/reliable after being serviced. Keep in mind any higher end deck such as any dual capstan machine will need more tedious cleaning when using ,for it to run properly. Simpler single capstan decks seem to be more problem free, dont require to be squeeky clean at all times.

BTW. I have both of the above decks and would sell you one of them. But you maybe be able to find a serviced one elsewhere. The bx would be $350cdn and it is almost mint. Its the nicest bx i have ever had. The Cr would be $300cdn. Its very nice too.
But honestly. I bet there is nothing seriously wrong with your 202. Just needs some tlc.

I'm having a similar issue on my 202. Except its the right channel and it is just very low in volume. I have cleaned the faders and switches very well and I have good signal coming from the head to the molex plug going into the main processing board. The level meter shows audio moving, but just very low.

Which POTs would I need to clean on the main processing board? VR101 and VR201?

Sorry to hijack the thread. If need be I will start a new one.

Have you tried reversing the RCA cables. Those connections can corrode as well, or just not seat properly or the cable itself is bad.

Yes, the issue flips sides.
New info: in headphones I hear hum in that channel. Beginning to think its a bad solder issue.
