Explain servo controlled tonearms to me

In layman's terms please. I have a Denon DP-37F which has a servo controlled tonearm. It's a great tracker, but what does servo controlled mean?

Well, sticking my head in the lion's mouth by disagreeing with Mark Hardy, I'm going to say that his reference to Wikipedia is not really helpful. Denon made a bunch of turntables with arms that had coils that helped to damp fundamental resonance of the arm, and anyother issues. They were simply coils in magnetic fields that responded to motion by generating a magnetic field that in tern generated a counter EMF, which cancelled the resonance. Some of the arms had a Q control that allowed the user to vary how much damping the coil provided.
