Explain to a young guy why reel to reel was the thing in 70s and 80s

I was gifted a Sony R2R 2 track recorder when i lived in Holland from my uncle, it was his sisters and i had around 30 reels! as others have said, people would record their brand new LPs and others LPs, well man did she have great taste, a lot of Beatles, Floyd, Bowie, Todd Rundrgen and T rex etc, and other great 70's stuff, I left a few components with my cousin when i left to move to Germany (ease my trip of stuff) well she lost both my Thorens TD 160 and my Sony R2R with all them nice Reels... :( i remember plugging into it directly and recording some guitar tracks and Vox for songs i was working on and MAN, did it trounce my 4 track cassette...I really wish i had that R2r, as someone said here, the tapes were like a time capsule of the person who made them, on Headphones at night laying on the couch watching the wheels go round was a very nice exp, i felt like i was in a time capsule myself :)
