Fair price on mcIntosh C28?

The MC2505 is the most powerful 50 wpc amplifier I've ever heard and it's a true classic. I've had several - can't tell 'em apart sonically from the bigger MC2105 and MC2300s when using them within their rated power. Just phenomenal amplifiers that were built to last a lifetime and then some.

As others have said, the C28 sounds like a bargain. The only thing you'd need then would be an MR74 or MR77 to round out the set.

I agree but the bottom line is it's still 50wpc and although it may sound louder it's still 50 wpc and you are limited with your speaker choices when spending $1000 on an amp when you can spend the same amount and get more for your money with a 2105 or a 2205.

Zitro,
I see you are in Seattle. I vouch for John's work as well and his prices are great as well.

I haven't seen this preamp it on CL... Good for you if you get it for that price.
$100 is low for cabinet so you should get it, even if you prefer MCs naked, as I do.

After a lot of deliberation, with myself and with my girlfriend who also is big into audio, I've decided to hold off a little longer, save up some more money and purchase a new/newer Mac integrated. I was trying to go cost conscientious with the used gear (plus I have a soft spot for vintage), but for my needs, one of the newer Mac amps is best suited.

That being said, I do have a NAD 3045 that I am very fond of, and am glad this whole venture introduced me to John (I was unfamiliar with his shop before inquiring about the vintage Mac). Now I know exactly who to take it to for a little refreshing!

PS, if someone else in Seattle is interested, here's a link to the gentleman's listing for the C28:

Thanks for all of your advice and help! This is a great forum for someone who is still learning, like me. :thmbsp:

Frankly, ~ $1,500 for that preamplifier + a good Mc amplifier is going to difficult to best regardless of cost. Late-model Mc integrated will probably be nearly double that amount - again, just the economist in me talking. :D

Somebody should snap at that C28 for starters and figure the rest out later. The volume control is a major plus.
