I always wondered what the amp was in your avatar Chris. Now I guess I know.. Nice sounding ? Do you own one or is it just one on the wish list?

When I first looked at it I thought that is was a funky modded HK Citation II or something :D .

hi doucanoe,

yes i do own one and they are a very nice sounding preamp.i still have to get in it and replace some caps as its not as quite as it should be but after i do this id be surprised if it couldnt hold its own against the more well known units of the day.it was on my wishlist for the longest time until this summer when i was able to get it for a more than reasonable price otherwise it'd still be on the wishlist. i still cant thank mojojojo enough for giving me the lead on it.

well now you know it's not and im glad i was able to clear things up :D

Nothing like advertising keyword spamming

The unit's may be nice but the lack of etiquette makes my reaction: :up yours:

Did I miss something? Im not sure I follow

dingus is referring to the way the seller has the preamp listed.he's using keywords such as mcintosh ,and western electric to get the ad to show up if you search for those items.this is very common and usaully ebay will pull the ad if someone complains.

what the seller did is perfectly ok, by ebay rules, & the item will not come up in a search if the "Search title and description" box isn't checked. the "keywords" are in the subtitle, not the title. if they were in the title, ebay could pull the auction, if someone notifies them.

these dont come up to often and if you've heard one you'd know why.the opening bid might scare some people but theyre definately worth it.fairchild 248
have you ever compared this preamp to a (relatively) modern preamp like a m.a.r. modded melos sha-gold-r, or ma333? i love my modded ma333; can't imagine ever letting it go. and, it has remote wolume! :D

doug,

sorry to say i havnt compared it to any modern preamps all i have around here is vintage gear.it'd be nice to try though if i ever found someone local with a newer tubed preamp.

tempting....

that preamp caught my eye a few times this week.....very very interesting particualarly since its the dual mono in one chassis variety. I havent heard it but it want it...

the fairchild 260 monos on the bay are also tempting.

id go for it but only if its been recapped and brought up to spec at that price.i currently have to recap mine but once its done it'll be a winner.

you mean the 255's either way those or a pr of 260's would work nice with the 248.myself i have a pr of 260's.be careful though the 255's are only rated at 25w so a efficient pair of speakers would be a must with those.the 260's on the other hand are rated at 50w.

Radioactive, was that you I saw bidding on the 255s? :D

you are correct anthony that was me.i was bidding on them for a friend but he's since changed his mind so i wont be bidding anymore on them.

by the way i hav'nt seen your bid yet on the 248,have you since changed your mind about wanting one.?if so i guess i can forget about the finders fee :D

Erhm...It's very tempting and since I recently sold my pair of Leak 12.1s I do have a bit of loose change lying around...

Although I must add that the Ampex 350s are a handful and keeping me busy for the time being, one of them (the noisy one as mentioned in my other post) requiring a minor recap, so I'll probably pass on this 248 :D
