Years ago I (mistakenly) volunteered to transfer a whack of 7” 45’s to cassettes for a friend. And at the time, I was using a felt mat.
A stylus sliding off a 7” single’s lead in grooves is not unusual but if it hits felt spinning at 45 RPM, there might be consequences and there were.
Back then I got my cartridges and styli cheap but none the less, two Shure V15 IV tips were yanked off. Being the glutton for punishment that I was, I managed to accomplish that feat within 24 hours.
That was the last time used a felt mat.
Just for fun, I cut a mat from Naugahyde a while ago and I like it. But like that felt mat, I have no idea if it has any positive or negative effect to the sound quality or anything else.
But I can say that no needles were done in, I think it looks cool and I can cut more in almost any colour I want. I have lots of Naugahyde remnants.
