FFYX 10th Anniversary Special Edition Redwood Air Flotation Turntable The Review

Sorry to hear of your motor issue. I wondered about that a bit when i saw pics of the table. That is a lot of platter for a small form motor. I wondered if it was shifting due to mass, or if its the motor itself showing speed instability. I thought it might be wise to weight down the motor some and see where it gets you. But I see you found a solution. I bet you can sell the old motor pretty easily and recover a good deal of its cost. Or you can DIY another table with a less massive platter and get it to work well, or at least sell it and recover some cash.

For what its worth, I took a motor upgrade on my main table. It was not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. An upgraded pod, new controller board, and new motor was every bit of $800. But it was worth the expense, and the table performs wonderfully. I felt it was a worthwhile purchase.

Given the overall cost of the table, I think you are still way on the positive side of the ledger in terms of performance versus price.

I tend to agree with this...I did make a rubber mat and that didn't help. I could find a way to weigh it down with some lead or possibly some duct seal below. Will give that a shot but it literally weighs 1/3 the WTL motor.

Prefer adapting the Scoutmaster motor considering how well it is working with the WTL motor which is "similar". I am in the process of purchasing one now. It's not that bad budget wise and still keeps everything sensible.

Lance contacted me today and thinks the speed issues are being caused by a faulty compressor. I had told him the compressor gauge had dropped to near 0 [while still maintaining air supply and the platter keeping speed] but now after moving the table around the normal pressure is back on the gauge. None of the hoses were pinched or leaking [I checked carefully]. Either way he is sending a replacement compressor. Pretty good customer service I say.

He tends to agree the motor could be better but thinks my speed issues were caused by the compressor but there are no speed issues with the motor from the WTRP. We will see.

I also confirmed that the plinth is one solid piece of wood...not a composit.

The joys of being a beta tester :D. The good part is that you will know this table inside and out, and get great value for the dollar. The bad part is you have to be a bit more time and intellect invested in this, as it is not a drop and plop kind of machine.

Work the bugs out, and you will be a happy guy with it.

From the threads I've read here over the years it seems one doesn't have to be a "beta tester" to go through this sort of thing. That the rest sounds so good and communication is working well bodes of success and at a true bargain cost at that.

Update on performance:

The issue with the compressor vanished...I moved some things around yesterday and had to disconnect the air supply tubes...when reconnected the gauge started reading again just like when it first arrived so all appears to be normal. I may have had a slight air leak at one of my connections...who knows, I am new to this table. We will see what Lance has to say about it.

Tested the motor on another table and had the same issues with speed. I have a Scout motor on order and let Lance know he should consider using a better motor. I think you will see that happen. I imagine it will bump the price up a bit but I think it would then be a much better package for the end user.

This has taken up a lot of my time but in the end I hope you all benefit. If you have the budget this table is worth every penny IMO.

BTW...I have my WTRP on BT. Have a look :)

Wow, that really says something about the new table! The WTRP is a great deck, so if the FFYX is that big a jump then it must be pretty spectacular indeed.

I wouldn't go as far as saying it's a big jump...as a matter of fact if I had a place to put the WT I would probably keep it.

The air table makes it easier for me to cue up records and make adjustments in my very tight cabinet...the slight edge in sound quality is a bonus :music:

Plus it's darn pretty!

Follow up info...

Still trying to work out the motor issues. Was told to lightly oil the centering pin, clean the bearing surface, oil the motor all to no avail. The rpm meter shows unacceptable speed fluctuations. For example it will change from 33.3 to 33.6 to 33.4 to 33.3, etc. Drives my stomach [and ears] to illness.

The speed was dead on with my WT motor in place so it is definitely a bad/cheap motor.

Scout II motor incoming.

Does the rpm meter read the controller output or a platter tachometer? If the former the problem is likely the controller.

I put a sensor on the rim of the platter and read it off there. Its also an audible shift in speed. You can here it speed up and slow down.

The seller is apparently working with Jasmine on a new motor and plans to send me one ASAP.

Great information. Thanks for the pictures of the arm BTW. The air holes you showed are on the top of the air tube, but are there holes on the front and back as well? Does the arm seem to float when balanced or does the air pressure just reduce the friction of the arm on the tube? As was previously mentioned, have you had a chance to weigh the arm with counterweight, as such would give an idea of the horizontal mass.

Thanks again and enjoy!!

Charles

So the motor is no good, which is really too bad as I was so hoping this would be a great purchase for you and who knows, maybe even me someday.

But then the seller is working with you and the manufacturer to fix the problem? Now that is good news and has me feeling all positive about this again. :)

Interesting journey here and the big thing - it sounds good enough that you sold a Well Tempered - that speaks volumes.

Only the top has holes and yes it appears to float with little or no friction. It will be hard for me to weigh the arm at this point without undoing the RCA connectors but I will ask the seller for the weight.

Yes...I think he should hold off selling more. It's a good thing he is working with me to make it a working package. This will most definitely make the table a real winner IMO.

Growing pains. This is what happens when you build a product with its sight set on high quality performance, but you want to keep the price tag within the reach of the average Joe. How good is good enough? Most times this question gets answered in the right way, and a few times it doesn't. But that is what "experience" is, learning from our wrong choices and doing better at the second whack at it.

The good thing for you is that this issue can be solved, heck you did it for yourself already. Sounds like they are going to take care of you, and while an inconvenience it is very cool. I suspect that the early days of the small American high end tables this sort of thing happened also. While the rough spots are ironed out we didn't out, they didn't have the net to broadcast their missteps.....or their successes. So that is a two edged sword in some ways. But then again look at what you are getting. Even 30 years ago high end air bearing and air tracking tone arms were major major bucks, and only a few could afford them. What FFYX is offering is remarkable, and it looks like they got the hard parts right. Just sort out the motor issue and you should be home free!
