Schmeisser: I think I remember that auction for your SR-929! I just remember they said it was in 'MINT CONDITION' with all the photos to prove it! $350 was a great price for what you got!!!!!!! (basically a new one!)
Yeah, it was me who got the headshell. The guy from Argentina who sold it to me sent out the headshell the very next day so I got it as quickly as possible. He super packed it too, unreal packaging. He packed it for a hurricane or something. The headshell is minty. I have
'never ever' had
'any problems' with
international eBayers, unlike many USA eBayers.
I really love the 838. It really does sound and function great. It was missing the origional headshell when I got it some 3 or 4 years ago. Since then I have picked up a couple Sansui headshells, just not the correct one for the unit. The headhell I was using was a Sansui black NOS headshell that looks exactly the same as the 838/929 headshell but without the azimuth adjustment screw. Got my 838 for $190. The only problem was the top cover was all super lightly scratched up from being in a closet for 20 years, no deep scratches though thank God. It was so scratched up you could hardly see through the top of it. I think that is why not many people bid on it. A little
'Meguiar's PlastiX' from the auto store made the top look like new. PlastiX is amazing stuff. It worked 'perfect'. Just hand rubbed it out in slow circular motion for 5 hours and presto, like new, looks like glass! It's magic stuff.
The only 'problem', if it is one, is that the strobe like 'flickers' super fast. I know a lot of AK 838 guys here have the same rapidly flickering strobe with their 838 so maybe this is normal. I mean, that's what strobes do, flicker, so I'm not worried about it. The TT keeps perfect speed in auto and manual. The 838 is just a remarkable machine. Never skips a beat and always produces amazing results. I'm really glad the lady packed it up like I told her to. I payed her an extra $20 to pack it the right way, the way "The Turntable Factory" tells people to pack their TTs for shipment - it worked out just perfect. She told me that she bought it, then when cassettes came out 1.5 years or so later, in the closet it went, so it has very low milage on it. She just didn't put any type of cover over it. That's how the top got scratched up.
Never seen or heard a 929 but the 838 is just a super TT for me. I'm totally happy with it, totally stoked really. Every time I even just look at it a smile comes upon my face!! It's a work of art and sonically super. Still using the origional Ortofon headshell she put on it, sounds wonderful. And now I have the origional headshell!! Amen, finally
I do need one more part, but it's no big deal, the little 'catch hook', that holds the tonearm on the pedistal, and it's complete. Other than that, physically, it's in 'like new' condition. Even the black base just shines. Not even a swirl mark on it. That little catch hook will come up one of these days, or years! LOL When it does, the 838 is complete!
Just yakin too much again! I love Sansui TTs. I truly love the SR-838! Just honestly don't know how ya can best it. It's a remarkable machine!
I'd love to see and hear a 929 someday!
