Finally...got myself a SR-838/929 headshell.

The 929 was a beautiful machine!(and heavy), I remember that was a Saturday morning that ebay sent me the alert on my 929 search(think the seller put it up no more than 2 hours),it was so nice on the photo that I jump on it within 5 minutes, also that was close to Xmas and the seller need cash fast! so I sent him payment right away but I also decided that I'll drove from Atlanta to Ohio to pick up my self ,I want to own a 929 for so long(since the late 70's)and that was the best condition and most completed one I've seen with that price so the extra money I spend on rental car and gas are well worth it ,I've seen so many sad stories about the receiver, speaker and TT turn up damage through mail, can't let that happen on this rare 929!!,good luck on hunting the last part on the 838.

Congratulations on getting that headshell! :thmbsp:

My recently-acquired SR-929 does NOT have the original headshell. The guy I bought it from promised to dig out "an original Sansui" headshell for me, and he did... but alas, not the original one for this TT, with the azimuth adjustment screw.

So now I'm on the lookout for one of those, too... hope I can have the kind of luck you did, and (at least eventually) find and get one!

In the meantime, at least it cleaned up beautifully. That PlastX stuff you mentioned does, indeed, work wonders on dust covers. Since reading about it here a year or two ago and trying it, I've used it on ALL my TT dustcover restorations. You do have to spend a lot of time rubbing to get the best results, but when you do, oh man, does it work out well!

Schmeisser: Just can't beat the 838s and 929s! I'd love to see and hear a 929 someday. Super well worth the drive! Yes, TTs are real dangerous to send in the mail. I can't remember the number of the TT (but it was a FR) that I orgionally purchased first but it arrived totally trashed, smashed, and the tonearm even bend. It was one of Sansui's first ones. This guy bought it and never even took the hardware out of the plastic secured bag. It was a shame, a real NOS 'museum piece'. What a shame to see that one trashed so you sure did the right thing taking a nice driving to pick it up.

Arkay: Just don't be in a hurry and someday the headshell will turn up. Took me 2.5 years but it 'finally' happen, for a real good price too. One of the guys here in AK mentioned to keep watching for turntables with that specific headshell. Sometimes you can buy a whole TT for $30 +/-, then tell the guy all you want is the headshell. Just missed an auction like that, that I was watching but missed the ending, like that once about 1.5 years ago.

All I know is the 838 (and 929) are super fine TTs. I'm totally happy with mine and it's like once you got one...no need to ever look for another, as far as I'm concerned, they are the 'best'. What more could you possibly want?? Sansui really built their 838s/929s for sure! Just super fine TTs! Heavy and they are quiet when running! Great machines and a joy to have!

Thanks guys for all the info and everything!!

Arkay :there are 2 Sansui turntables on ebay(SR636,SR737 and they with SR929 headshell),you can ask the seller see they can just send the headshell alone(trash the TT?) if you win the auction so you can save alot from shopping(both seller are from U.S.).

P.S. try to send you a PM but your box was full.

I have and am listening to an 838 and love it, I know someday I will need to replace the cart but have concerns as to what will work as well. Any thoughts as to which will sound best?

Guys,
Carefully watch the auctions for phono cartridges already mounted on headshells too. That's how I got a spare silver headshell for my SR-929 complete with the azimuth adjustment screw about six months ago. The auction was for a low end Audio Technica cartridge mounted on a headshell. I recognized the headshell and won it for $17 after shipping, rusty mounting screws and all. The headshell is in really good shape only showing marks where the mounting screws were. It now has a Shure V15 type III on it that shares duty with an Audio Technica AT-15Sa on my original headshell. Plus I still have the low end AT cart to sell and recoup a buck or three! Happy hunting.

AS far as I'm concerned, the SR-838 is the 'best ever' TT. What more can a guy want????

Need a cart????? me too really, but 'not' really, I'm using an old 1980 cart and it sounds really great, kinda super special, ortofon super great. Ortofon. I'll get you the number later cause I am really messed up right now, Kirin and Southern Comfort.

Not the BEST EVER TT?????? show me. and then it's still the best.....ever!!!
It sounds simply wonderful, magical

and works simply wonderful. What more do you want out of life????????????????????

If it sounds like the best...........it is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And the SR-838 is the best in the world.

I've never heard a better one

That pretty much rapps it up.

Sorry Bluesky , how about the 929 ? there maybe some other TT cost more than my mortgage but I'll stick with my SR-929 with Shure V15 III , I'm a Sansui guy too , got a old add from Reader's digest which I kept for 30 years ! just show to all Sansui's fan that I got all the gears from that add after all this years !!! and big thanks to ebay too ,sorry about the quality of the add ,but it's not bad for a 18 years old kid(back then) who look at it everyweek for past 30 years!!!!!

(frame that!)

SR-838/929 - the best of the best, period.

the sound. the feeling. the everything. what more is there to say????

I love mine. I mean, it's love. true love. forever. 838/929: 2 peas in a pod.

all you have to do is listen.........and look........and listen........

I'm still runnin a 1980 Ortofon cart and it sounds way far out! (doesn't have that much milage on it). It sounds unreal.

We got the best!

(maybe the other guys think they have the S^%t, but we got the real thing!)

Guess were just lucky!!!!!!!!!!!

My brother and cousin came over the other day, actually a couple years ago, looked at the TT and it just blew em away!
Still blows me away every time I see it!! And they sound even better!!! :)

Headshell sells on the bay for $71 plus shipping. blue, you did very well getting that one from way down south. I only paid a few dollars more than that recent bay sale for the whole SX-838 with the correct headshell. Amazing what folks will pay for stuff that is a bit hard to find.
