Finished Sony STR-6055 Project

H2s04

Hello all,

I haven't posted in awhile, but I'm planing to be a much more active member in the coming days. To start off, I just finished a few little repairs on my Sony STR-6055, like bulb replacement, tuner alignment, and avery thorough cleaning of the entire unit.

I don't have any info on this receiver, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me the year or WPC output, or any ineresting facts about it. For example, where did it sit on the receiver line? was it TOTL? or a bottom feeder? Given its size and complexity, I'm guessing its somewhere above the middle. Any thoughts?

I've posted a few pictures of the repair and cleaning process for you all to enjoy :)

classy hence discrete - typical Sony of that time :thmbsp:

The 6055 was third from the top: above were the big STR-6200F and STR-6065, below were the 6045 and the small 6046.
6200F, 6065, 6055 and 6045 are updates on the late 60s models (6120, 6050, 6040 ; 6060 was very different).

Power was rated at 2x 40W RMS (8Ohm, 1kHz, 0,2% THD), bandwidth at 15Hz...30kHz ; preamp frequency response at 12Hz...60kHz (+0 / -3dB).

Available 1970...1972/73.

Great receiver :thmbsp: and great looking work  . Weighs a ton for only 40wpc. Orion states that it cost $280 new and was sold from '71-76. Am guessing that includes both the STR-6055 (early years) and the STR-6055A (later years). Anyone know what the differences are (the tuning meter is green and above the dial on the left on the 'A')? My -6055A sits in its honored place of being our LR system. Understated elegance in spades. Very high WAF. :D

Excellent tuner and overall sound. Think it is my favorite receiver. Anyone got a spare case? I haven't jumped into mine to replace the bulbs yet. Which ones does it use and where did you obtain same? Mine is as near mint as anything I've gotten off of eBay. Paid a whole $25 as a BIN, IIRC. Once I get an F-connector switch installed in the line from the attic yagi the antenna disappears and the reception jumps up. Vintage Sony is as good as it gets.

I have the same receiver in the basement in the fix it pile. Soon as you turn it on it blows the fuse. After looking at yours I might just have to get it fixed. :scratch2:

You did an excellent job. :thmbsp:

thank you all for your comments!

This is the first experience I've had with a vintage Sony receiver, and I'm quite pleased :)
There are two moere things that I need to do before the receiver is complete, but they're minor, like the stereo indicator bulb needs to be replaced, and the volume, bass, and treble potentiometers need to be sprayed with DeOxit (I certainly would have done it while cleaning, but I'm all out :/ )

Next on the list is my Pioneer SX-1000TW, but it's glass dial face has a small piece missing :dammit:. Dial face and all, I'll be posting about that receiver as well once its finished.

Looks great. It's nice to see some more of the old Sony's getting the TLC they deserve. Makes me wish I'd taken some before and during pic's of my 6800SDs.

I have a 279,50$ for the 6050 and 319,50$ for the 6055 in 1972.
1976 is quite optimistic as, by then, the STR-7xxx had taken over since about a couple of years.... But it seems the US market often got the Sony stuff later than everyone and, sometimes, somewhat for longer time.
