Finished Sony STR-6055 Project

Damn fine job :thmbsp:. I recently replaced the power switch in one I picked up a year ago, no wood case. Presently hooked to T.V.. Don't you just love that green glow at night!!

Ah, the 'Magic Hour'

Great job and great pic. :thmbsp:

I just picked up a STR-6050 off Ebay just refurbished for $16 and I can't wait to hear it! It's only 30 watts and it seems to be quite different inside from yours but its identical on the outside. Great Thread

Nice unit. I have the 6065 and 6045. The 6055 is the receiver I've owned for the most years. Got it about 88. It was used 24/7 in the office and my kid has been using it since. Recently notice the dial bulbs finally burnt out. Has been opened up a coupled of times to clean the volume control. About a year ago I picked up the 6045 and been using it on and off. It is less detailed than the 6065 but still really good. Also have a few 6060s. I second the vote that the early Sony units are some of the best out of Japan at the time.

STR 6055 Metal Case?

I recently picked up a 6055. Do not know where it sat but it was encased in a nasty covering of dust and ick which after several hours cleaned up beautifully. Actually it is like brand new with the exception of a scratch on the outer volume knob. All connections on the back have absolutley no corrosion. I washed the Sony dust cover on the FM tuner inside and it is like brand spank'in new. Lucky find in a junk store for 15 bucks. It now gets to power my patio and office and is once more in use!

Any input on why it has the metal case? every picture of a 6055 I see is wood.

Hey H2sO4,
Can you give us some more details about the face plate cleaning process?
You mention waxing. How exactly is that done?
Thanks in advance.
Jorge

The standard case was the metal case. Like many companies of the time the wood sleeve was an accessory. Overall when you look at all the 60xx and 70xx series receivers there are far more without the wood then with but there does seem to be a higher % with them than say a Marantz, Sherwood, McIntosh and others. I have 5 Sony receivers from this era and only 2 have wood sleeves.
