First home set up need helpppp

I haven't heard 901's since '74, that can recall. If the 18 drivers haven't been refoamed, and need it now? That's a big job, and a pain, for 18.

To my ears L100s were knives to the ears. Very forward, in your face. My Personal preferance. I listen to jazz, so no JBLs.

I had some Boston Accoustics A100 series one with Seas tweeters.( I think the series two changed tweeter brand. ) Sounded nice. The A100 is the two way version. I prefered them over New Large Advents I had. May have been the Seas tweeter that I prefered. Both speakers were 10" two-ways.

Like I said, my preferance.
I heard the new L100 mk2 Classic at Axpona show. Still not my preferance.
But, given the prices they get. Some listeners do like them.

If you like the Bose 901 series IIs, you’d probably prefer the later series (III, IV, V, or VI). They got better and more efficient. You might find a series VI for $300.

Regarding amps/receivers: with 901s, more power is better. You’ll need a tape monitor.

Seeing the prices you've been quoted and that, I'm assuming your new to this, I say take your time and don't dive straight into the deep end such as 15 hundy for those JBL as an example.

It's Spring time now which is great for yard/garage/estate sales if your patient you might be able to find some stuff also keep an eye open on your local FB Marketplace, CL etc
 
From what I read, the 901 series 1 and 2 had non foam surround that did not rot

Definitely not dropping 1500 for the JBL’s, I think these 901’s might take it, especially since I don’t meet to re-foam them. On the aesthetic side I also really like them for my place and the room is big enough to help compliment the sound they output.

I’m having trouble figuring out if I grab additional speakers to make up for the low end they seem to lack, found some 501’s to match but not sure if that will only detract from the overall sound.

On the receiver side of things also not quite sure which make and model I should go for, so if y’all have any advice that would be appreciated
 
Last nuance, found a HK receiver recommended by the Bose manual but it seems the whole left side is out. Guy will give it to me for free, I would just need to go down the rabbit hole to repair it myself.

In those days, did Bose make their speaker components? Or did they buy them from someone else?

I LOVE the way they chose speakers with three frame-hole mounts. Making it harder to sub anything generic. ;)

I would not recommend buying a second set of speakers,. To make up for your impression of deficiencies of 901. To run at same time as the 901s.
I would do some in depth investigating before buying an Amp to drive the 901s. For that matter investigate the 901s well. There are likely a few AK members with hands on experience with 901s.
I have Magnepans. Maggie's and 901s likely would rely on perfect room placement to bring out the best in them. Can't be plopped down anywhere and sound good. To start, you would want a symmetrical left and right placement. Walls behind and to sides similar and same distance from speakers.
Purely my guesses. No expience owning 901s.
