first infinity Speaker?

SleeperSupra, can you give me a rating or at least a list in order of sound qoulity of the speakers you have? I would be interested to see where the Qe falls.
 
The EMIT is more of a supertweeter playing at 4kHz and above compared to typical tweeters that are crossed over at around 2kHz.
You then need a driver that plays well up into that region and suppose ones ears can decide how well that's accomplished.
As to the EMIT-r, it's fine perhaps better than the original,imo.

I see lots of money spent on infinity speakers in my future. I will see if i can get a good price on the Qe's and test them against my Beyerdynamics T1 headphone as well as my old cheapo speakers.

I suspect shipping on the Qe's will be very very expensive, due to their size.

Any objections?

There is just a slight problem according to the seller the tweeters don't work (he blames the crossover, as well as non original woofers. Also the mid range seems damaged, so i don't think those would be any good.

Also i came across some Refference 9's as well.

Also the Qe i found seem to be missing the speaker grill holding nubs. Thus making the Cabinet a open one. I could rebuild them but i would need reference fotos from an existing Qe as well as measurements, if i were to get them.
 
I'd stay away from those Q4s. Finding original Watkins woofers is very hard, even here. And expensive. Also, they are very demanding on amps. Your Optonica would be killed.
 
it depends on what your needs are. if you want a small 2-way the Qe may fit your needs. it is not top of the line by any measure, but a decent small infinity. personally, i like the 3- and 4-way designs, and prefer the 10" or 12" woofers to the 8", but that means a larger speaker. the emit tweeter is an eye-opening experience, but it is best supplemented with a good midrange driver(s) in the cabinet, and a larger sized woofer(s). like i say, it's dependent on your requirements and budget. start where you feel comfortable, but if experience has taught us anything, it is that your first infinity very likely won't be your last.

Qb's seem to get good reviews here at AK.
RSb's, and RSM's would not be bad choices either.
Each of those are 3 way speakers with EMITs.
The Qe's aren't a bad place to start if you can get them for a decent price.
 
Also, to consider are Infinitesimal Modulus + a powered subwoofer.

Prices of the Modulus are insane in the US, I'd think they'd be even higher in Germany.

One good thing about the Q series is that the woofers have rubber surrounds, so they won't require refoaming. Most (but not all) of the newer models use foam.

The original Modulus was worth every penny of its retail price new, and more than worth the used prices, yes they are that good. That said, I recently saw a pair sell for under $300, there's one happy new member to the Modulus fold. I've also seen 2 original Modulus subs sell for $300 in the past yr, one of which is serving duty in my bedroom system.

I purchased a complete Modulus system including stands (missed out on the wall brackets) new in 1991, had to leave the sub behind in Ca. when I returned to Fl. in 2012. Never dreamed I would be able to replace it so cheaply, the sub alone retailed for $2000 back in 91.

The prices quoted above were on eBay.

First off, i am looking into getting into the large 12" infinity speakers, and i am saving up for one of the IRS series. The smaller speaker is only to bridge the gap between now and the time i get the IRS Speakers + amp. Also another reason is, i am reasonably sure that a infinity speaker in the up to 200$ range will outperform my current (originally 100 euros) speakers with some slight mods, and new tweeters (i kind of sort of broke one, somehow).

I have no doubt that the Modulus is a very good system, and i am currently considering getting them for my Desk setup (after i have the IRS) but the prices on them are insane. I found some locally for 700 euros a piece, and that's a tad bit high for me at the moment. But i am liking their design, very impressive! I also find it interesting that the woofers look a lot like the woofers on current Klipsch speakers.

My main listening room / bedroom can just about handle a IRS gamma in terms of size and SPL.

I have also ripped the images of the Qe from the online offering to see your guy opinion, according the the seller they work.
So basically based on all the posts so far: Get the Qe if you can get a good price, and upgrade from there.

Wasn't suggesting the Modulus, only responding to the comment concerning their current value. The original Modulus is a very rare speaker and one of the reasons for its continued pricing. As a side note, the driver in the Modulus sub is the same one in the RS-V's. I believe the IMG mid bass driver was proprietary, the earliest iterations with matching curvilinear dust cap are the best IMO.
 
Infinity got a lot of mileage out of that woofer. It was also used in the Beta, Gamma/Delta, and without the accelerometer in the Kappa 7, 8 and 9. A similar driver (but with better foam) was used in the Kappa 8.1/9.1 and SSW-212 sub (which I assume had one driver with the accelerometer, since it is servo controlled like the IRS models).
 
I think i will just stick with my headphone and my current speakers for now, but also look out for a Modulus. I will also save up for one, and get it to by the alternative to the IRS i will eventually have.

I see the Qe as a waste of money, and space for now.
 
I see a pair of Modulus available on eBay for $350 if still interested, if I didnt already have a pair these would be mine, not to mention I have three other pairs of speakers on their way to me now, LOL.
 
Quick qestion on the monulus, how much power do they need to sound good? My current most powerful amp is 65W continues into 4 ohms. Would that be enough, or should i go biamping using a 70W (into 8 ohm) and 50W into (8 ohm). Or will the 65W be sufficient to get good results out of that EMIT.

And yes i am still very interested. I also found a Modulus in Germany, but the seller wants 800 euros for it, but they have the original stands with them as well.
