I agree. If music is what you are after, go with a 2-channel system. AV receivers overall don't play music well.

Maybe you meant "some AV receivers"? My Denon AV receiver is excellent at music and my Sony is very good. Some, oth, are crap and may do well with movie soundtracks but fare poorly with just music. Lots of volume but poor tonal balance is what I hear from them. However, if stereo music is the goal, a stereo receiver or components is a better and cheaper way to go. My Denon is a $1200 receiver and it had better sound great but one could get as equally good sound with a stereo unit at half that price.

Ah, you are correct, I should have clarified IME.

However the OP's Yamaha is not a 1200.00 receiver, so....

Another solution to stopping speaker feedback is to hang the turntable from the ceiling. This only works if there isn't anyone living above you. It's the only way that I was ever able to completely isolate my TT from my Speakerlab 7s. I used it in 4 different homes and it works quite well.

4 eye-bolts into the rafters with a slightly larger pattern than the platform, 4 eye-bolts in a platform, and 4 chains to hang the platform (with turnbuckles to get the level perfect. important!). I used lag type eye-bolts above and machine screw eye-bolts below and screwed the eye-bolts completely through the platform and further isolated it with rubber washers and fender washers. Having the upper eye-bolts slightly wider than the TT platform will make it stay centered and not sway around.

Actually I am in Olympia also. There is another AK member Audiofreak71 who lives in Lacey and does nice hybrid HT/2 channel audio system. At a certain level it can work well. I am a 2 channel guy, and have some decent JBL speakers here also.

Always good to meet a fellow AKer in the area.

Speaking of turntable rumble: I'm always amazed at the photos I see of guys with turntables within a few inches of some vintage speakers with massive woofers. I had a pair of Speakerlab 2's on stands on a concrete floor with the turntable in the same room, and if it weren't for the garden paving stone on top of foam cubes beneath the Dual turntable, that thing would've rumbled like the Jets and the Sharks.

I wonder if anyone has ever made and marketed some sort of thin concrete tile sealed inside a bag of jelly or four little liquid filled feet. Either of those would be a more elegant solution than some big honking concrete block or a trapeze.

That is true....

You see picture after picture of multiple speakers right next to a stack of equipment as if resonance does not effect vinyl.

Could anyone possibly guide me through repairing my l166's? The midrange was not producing sound so I decided to buy a new one and I put it in and it still doesn't work. There is sound coming from the Tweeter and the Woofer, is there something wrong with my crossover? And I also want to put in some 122h's for the woofers but one thing at a time lol

I live more towards the tenino area. Grew up in Lacey though, by the post office figured out my horizons are going to cost me some cash, so might as well "upgrade"them while I'm able haha.

There's probably a problem with the L-pad level control for the mid. It may just need cleaning (look up 'Deoxit'), if you're lucky.

There are more options than just the 122H for the woofers, BTW. The 122A, 126A and 129H are all fine for the L166. The 128H will also work OK, and is much more easily found (it was used in a large number of different JBL models over several decades).

I just purchased some 128h woofers. Should be on their way on Friday. Feeling a little crazy for buying them. I'm also crazy for wanting to do this on my own. This is my first time doing anything like this but I also feel like it's my duty to the l166's. I want to do it correctly and professionally, while still doing it by myself. My soon-to-be father-in-law who gave me the speakers for Christmas this last year figures I could trade my way up to other sets of JBL's, but I just fell in love with these and want to bring them back to their former glory. The only reason they're so beaten up is because they've been through two generations of kids. And I want to keep the legacy going I guess. And for anybody who wishes to assist me please have patience,because I probably know virtually nothing about this but I'm willing to soak up all the knowledge like a respectful sponge.

Well right now at this moment the midrange on the left one does not work. I've replaced it and efforts to restore the sound to it , to no avail. Somebody said something about a component inside that I know nothing about so maybe the schematics or something like that? I guess I would like to know what to expect when I take the woofer off and I know nothing about crossovers except for that they're called that and they're kind of like the brain of the speaker

You should be cleaning the L pads. They're the controls behind those adjusting knobs on the front panel. There's one for the midrange and one for the tweeter.

You can access them through the woofer hole. Spray some Deoxit contact cleaner spray into their vent holes and rotate the knobs several dozen times. Probably fix your midrange problem.

Man, such a shame to lose those orange grills.
