Hey everyone. I am thinking through a choice. I have a PAS preamp that works nicely. Do I A) buy it a matching, ready-to-go ST-70 amp, or do I B) sell the PAS and consolidate into a Fisher receiver? I have the tuners I need, so that really does not play into the equation. Financially, either one is viable. I mostly use the much-maligned Pioneer CS-99a speakers. I think either the Fisher or the Dynaco should be pretty easy to re-sell if I move along, right? Would love your thoughts, thanks!

I still have my much modded Dyna 70 I got over 45 yrs ago.
My suggestion sell the Pass, and get a rebuilt Fisher X/KX 200/202 integrated amp.
and more importantly, get better speakers First priority!
then build around them

much as I love the look of receivers and tuners, I will tell you that I don't buy receivers anymore unless I just can't pass it up. Its a whole lot of extra complexity to work around and a lot of extra heat generation for no reason if you don't really listen to the radio.
if you do actually listen to the radio though, you could do a whole lot worse than a Fisher. They made a good tuner and their stereo decoders work extremely well.

I vote Dynaco. Lots of support, documentation and parts. Several versions ate still being produced. With recievers, you have to ask yourself, am I really going to use the tuner that much? FM radio isn't what it used to be and streaming music through the internet has pretty much taken its place.
To begin with, all you would need for the ST-70 is an input selector with a volume control if you can't afford a preamp yet. My ST-70 is setup right now without an active preamp and sounds great. I replaced the mono/stereo switch with a volume control.

Good point--but I do still listen to FM a few times a week and so I can always use my tuner as needed, even if I go with the pre amp/power amp combo.
It seems like people just love their Fisher receivers. Sometimes I wonder how much of that is the really good industrial design, as well as the good sound.The Fisher 400 was my second tube piece. 1st was the dyna70

Gateway drug--totally! I will always have a solid state system out of loyalty to my dad, who walked away from tubes in the late sixties and never looked back. But I do love what tubes do, especially for the vocals, the strings, the pianos that I love so much (jazz, folk, old blues....)
Yes, the ST70 seems like a real winner--and a piece that looks so good without the cage on! Since I have the PAS pre already, it would be easy.

I agree with everyone else on this. Good, efficient speakers is a priority. I have a few stand-alone tube amps but there's nothing like listening to a Fisher. They're just so good. I am partial to the Fisher receivers though. Nope, I don't listen to the radio but that green and yellow glow from the tuner glass is just about the coolest looking thing in my house.

If you have efficent enough speakers, the ST-35 at 15wpc is a really nice sounding amp.
I have both the ST-70 and a ST-35. The ST-35 gets more play time. It's connected to a pair of 93db speakers and gets plenty loud.

Thanks--I had never even come across the ST-35. I suspect that would be enough power for me (speakers rated at 96db). I will keep an eye out. Basically, I have to be honest with myself: I want every single one of these things, Dynaco, Fisher, and beyond!
ST-35 at home in middle/high school. Trust me, it can play loud.
Pricey though if the bay is an indication. Even parts/not working sells in the hundreds. I suspect guys just buy anything to get the transformers and chassis since the ST-35 is such a great candidate to restore.

Good thing I don't have a 400. With my 12 or more pieces of Fisher tube gear I was worried that I had a problem.
