Fisher 500TX Front Face lettering

Hi everyone, I just aquired a Fisher 500TX and I wanted to know if there was anyway one could reletter the front face because some of the words like "volume" on my front plate is starting to fade.

There is a thread in this forum "Replacement Fisher faces" where the op has a connection on cutting and lettering faceplates. His work is the best I've seen. Otherwise, you might look into water slide decals. I'm working on replacing lettering on my SA-100 and decals is the best I've come up with.

Concur Decals is the easiest and most economical way to go. Then top coat it with some clear lacquer or decal-cote. Radio-Daze has decal lettering sheets that you can either get with full words or just letters and numbering. As I recall that 500-TX was the better of the two that I had, esthetically. I don't think that face plate would be economically feasible to recreate. It's more a casting or stamping than an extrusion like those on earlier units like the 500-C.

Here's a pic of the one I still have. The lettering around the Volume knob is wearing off. This is common with the 1st and 2nd gen S.S. Units.

That style face plate has flat panels glued in between the flanges. If the casting itself is good, would it be possible to just replace the inserts?

I just looked at mine and it seems you are right, it is glued. interesting, that might make it easy to recreate.

Here is a sample of decals I had my #1 son to make for my SA-100 using CLEAR injet decal paper. You have to create the graphic with whatever graphic program you have on your computer. Watching model decal videos online helped me understand the process as well as what is needed to apply and coat the decal. Pretty amazing work those model guys do!

In my case, after applying the decal, I learned that I had to use WHITE decal paper since my chassis was a dark color. I had to start all over trying to match the background of the paper to the color of the chassis. Kinda hard using the 3 colors an inkjet printer provides. In your case, I think you can get by with clear paper. You just have to concentrate on getting the color of the lettering down.

Giang; Look locally for a Hobby Shop that does R/C cars and LIONEL trains. The larger one's will have Testors Decal sheet's (blank) that you can put in an inkjet printer. You may have to order over the phone or internet. You place the decals just like you would on a model car, plane, ship, etc. Then clear coat it.
