Fisher MT-6225

mythless

Looking for projects!?
The seller is the 2nd owner and says he rarely used it, In the picture it looks pretty good, he wants $100 obo. What do you think it is a fair price to offer? As well anyone familiar with these turntables to know what to look for?

Cheers

AFAIK, that was a fairly high-end Fisher table. I don't believe that it's quartz locked, but I don't recall any specific speed issues even though it has a fairly light platter. I think the plinth is a combination of particle board on top with some plastic below with a vinyl veneer. As long as you don't see any bubbling that much should be fine. The speed controls will likely benefit from a Deoxit bath. I'd say that $60-$75 would be fair depending upon condition.

Thanks Dave,

You're right it's not quartz. Hrmm...I guess it isn't very heavy if it's using veneer and a light platter. Would that be an issue for direct drives? I'm not too knowledgeable about TTs, but does that mean I would have to remove the speed controls to clean them?

Cheers

I have one and like it. I do think that $100 is high. I would try to get that cut nearly in half.

One important thing to know is that the speed is controlled by a series of magnetic strips under the platter. If even one of those gets damaged, the thing is a paperweight. Before buying, check that it holds a steady speed. If it doesn't, don't count on a simple DeOxit fix, just pass on it. If it does hold speed, take the platter off and visually inspect the magnets for any loose pieces or cracks.

Do you primarily spin albums or singles? I find this table to be a giant killer at 33 but some resonances expose themselves at 45.

Best of luck to you.

Nice vintage table, but the going rate is closer to $50-60 than $100. Markshan is right about the magnetic strips. Pull the platter and check the bottom. You'll see them. If there is any damage or material missing, pass.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll have to ask him to remove the platter. I guess I primarily spin albums so the larger ones, 33.

Well, I think I'll pass on the table. The patter kept rubbing against the magnets and none of us (including the owner) didn't know how to remove the platter. But, I think it's either the magnets are getting bad or platter balance issue? Also the ground was missing the spade connector. He says he'll adjust it and come back? What do you guys think?

Side note: I found a Kenwood KD-3070 at the flea market for $25, stylus is shot but it seems to hold speed. I am sure I can get it lower and probably ask for a refund policy of some sort.

The missing spade is a non-issue. The platter certainly may be. Did it rub only as you were trying to remove it or during operation? Was the speed steady?

$25 for the Kenny is a no brainer IMHO.

Well, if there was enough friction between the magnet (top left of the platter area), it wouldn't move at all. But when you "offset" the weight off of the magnets it spins then slowly begins to rub that piece and eventually come to an halt. I still think even if the owner "fixes" it, it's a pass.
