Foam surround vs Rubber surround

I have a pair of Infinity RS4b speakers that I found at a local resale store for cheap ($10 for the pair). The woofer surrounds are totally gone. I plan on replacing them surrounds myself as I have done 5.25 car speakers in the past. My question is, can I replace the foam surrounds with rubber without degradation to the sound of these speakers?

You might contact simplyspeakers.com and ask them the question. They sell rubber and foam replacement surrounds.

Short answer is no, you shouldn't replace rubber with foam. The materials have different mass and different flex characteristics. The Infinity woofers were designed with foam for a reason. Once you've changed surrounds from foam to rubber, you've essentially built a different woofer which would require different box tuning.

New replacement foam should last at least 20 years.

As stated earlier stay with the foam , the new foam is better and will last as long if not longer than the original , and I also suggest getting the kit through simpler speakers had very good luck with their kit and they have good customer service !

Wow, $10 for a pair of RS4b's! That's almost as good as the deal I got on my second pair of RS4b's, left on the curb for free. Excellent condition but of course the foam surrounds are rotted out and need replacement. The guy getting rid of them also had put out a set of RS5b's as well, so of course I grabbed those too, also in excellent condition, just rotted foam surrounds.
