Have you used the Fosi P4 preamp? I'm considering one for a little system I'm putting together for a friend, and have been seeing mixed reviews. Some reviewers feel it noticeably degrades the signal. Thanks.

Turning on the tone controls and/or bass management enables the DSP and that results in this issue. If you bypass DSP, it is a truly transparent preamp. Kind of defeats the purpose for many people, though.

Nice thread, realy enjoy reading it. I have 2 x Fosi V3 monos coming, but can't decide which preamp to get. Thinking about the Fosi P4 or the SMSL DO100 Pro DAC. I don't know how the volume control works on this DAC when powered off. After power on the DAC starts with 100% volume or remember the last volume setting?

OK, Thanks. I have an SMSL SU-1 DAC, so sound wise buying Fosi P4 should be a better option? Or sell the SU-1 and buy the SMSL D6S or DO100 Pro?
I use the Fosi zp3 with my v3 monos with great results. Is there any reason you're considering the p4 and not the zp3?

SMSL DS6 seems like a good option that will allow you to take advantage of the balanced inputs on the V3 Monos which passes through one less op-amp internally as the RCA inputs use an extra op-amp to convert the signal to the necessary balanced differential signal to feed the internal architecture of the amp.

I saw the P4 has motorized volume pot, and the price is affordable ~100 USD.

His current DAC only has single-ended outputs and the unbalanced input seemed to yield lesser performance with ZP3.

Good to know about the difference between RCA and balanced inputs. I think the better solution is to sell the SU-1, and get the D6S or DO100 Pro simply for balanced connection.
You might want to check out the Fosi ZD3 DAC. I use one and find it to be a good option. It has volume control, remote control and an ARC HDMI connection among others. Plus, it has XLR connections which the V3 Mono has too.

Thanks. I will consider this option, too. I have vintage Marantz 2230, Tandberg TR220 receivers, and the Harman 2x100W vintage amp with JBL 4311 and L110A speakers. Now want to try these little Fosi's. Realy don't know what to expect comparing them to my vintage stuff.

I did the same when trying out a Fosi ZA3 almost two years ago. I ended up buying a second one to run a dual mono configuration. I haven't used any of my vintage components since then. For me, the V3 Mono is perfect in design- a basic amp without volume control, an inactivity timer, and pretty decent connectors... just pure and simple, that's how I like it...

Have you heard the V3 Mono's? Sorry if you already posted the answer earlier... I haven't heard the ZA3's yet... regarding SQ-I would make the same argument about the V3 Mono's... very quiet! However if the ZA3 is demonstrably better I may have to get a pair!
The V3 monos weren't out when I bought the second ZA3. If they were I would have bought them instead due to the PFFB circuitry. Both sound nearly identical from a sound quality aspect. I have read that the ZA3 has a little warmer sound than the Monos.Have you heard the V3 Mono's? Sorry if you already posted the answer earlier... The PFFB is a great circuit feature! Pretty much load-independent stability!
