Fostex BK-16 Horn project

Yep you guys are right those drivers are very similar to the Fostex drivers. I stand corrected.

I love the rounded corners, tweeter support and finish on yours. Very beautiful. I have another pair of horns with the old Sigma 108 drivers that do certain things very well. I've modded and altered them several times over the past decade, but they still get daily play and I still like them.

The best tweek I tried for the BK-16's was doubling the thickness of the outside walls. Really added a nice bass bump.

I just sold the BK-16's for space reasons and needing the dollars for a few new tools. I'm sure I'll be kicking myself shortly.
 
Wow, seeing them assembled with a finish really looks better than the advertisment on Madisound! You guys are skilled for sure. :tresbon: How would you rank them in comparison to other Fostex models?

I'm with you, pal.
I liked them at the Fest and when I went across the hall to the High Water Sound room, there was a set of Thoress FR20 Mk2's that were a similar design that really knocked my socks off, so it's got the Fostex single driver juices flowing.

BTW, kudos to both of you guys for some beautiful looking speakers:thmbsp:
 
Let me add my two cents after hearing them at the Fest.

I told the guys from Madisound, and I'm saying it again:

These speakers were, for me, the highlight of the Fest. I was absolutely astounded. They sounded better than some of the $3,000-$4,000 speakers.

Well, OK, given the choice I'd take the IDS line arrays, but $19K is juuuuust out of my reach.

Next to $19,000, I'll take the BK-16's at $650.

Gary, did you just glue on another layer of cabinet-grade birch ply on the outside?

Any other changes to the cabinets?

Yeah, I'm with Andyman and Fisherdude, those Fostex at the fest surprised the hell out of me and where one of my favorites there.

After building a few speakers in Baltic birch and even with the use of a nicely fitted out woodshop including a CNC router, I am astounded that you can get a pair of these in flat-pack kit form for under $700 bucks - a true bargain.
 
You can order the BK-16 cabs by themselves. The front and rear baffle boards are doubled for extra thickness and the horn folds provide the crossbracing on the outer walls (rear included). Anyway, if you order a pair of cabs, a pair of FF165K drivers and a pair of the gold-plated binding post cups, it comes to just $325. A true bargain.
 
Hey Fisherdude!

I just glued/laminated another layer of ply to the outside. Worked great and cut some of the resonance that my ears where hearing on certain types of music.

I also sprayed the board behind the driver with car audio sound deadener. Read about that mode at AA.

The tweeter stands are held in place with magnets under the veneer. Worked slick.

Neat application for the magnets. I have used that method for mounting speaker grills for years.
