An advantage of back loaded horns like these Frugal Horn Mk3s is they don't require notch filters or BSC circuits. I built two pair of these Frugal Horns and it's been great fun trying different full range drivers like Fostex, Mark Audio and CHB's. The latter two are my favorites.

The Coral Holey Baskets running full range with nothing between speaker and amp to get in the way of the sound is a thing of beauty. Adding the separately amped bass woofers to fill in what the little wide banders can't produce is icing on the cake.

So much I want to pick your brain on this topic, Poultry, lol. Thank you for your persistence on this style of listening/speaker.
 
I'm about to take the plunge into full range with Trusonic 120FR's. I've never had, nor even listened to any so am excited about this new experience. I'm hoping the results will be on par with what the OP has been able to achieve. Plan to drive them with a McIntosh MC225 amp.

I bought a pair of non-working Solo 103 type speakers for $5.00 a few years ago. I opened them up and they had 10F3 drivers without the holed dust cap, red-ish surround and and cream colored cone. I say they are a type of Solo 103 because they have no front badge and the back only has screw connectors, no RCA plug. Unless very early Realistic Solo's had no markings I'd say these were a Japanese only version, sold in Japan??? Anyway, they are blown but look almost perfect. I don't want to thrown them away. I am wondering if they could be repaired?
I replaced those drivers with the Realistic all black 40-1197 drivers and the speakers sound great in a proper bookshelf (Ikea Kallax 8 cube hole version on its side), which I find really increases the bass response in a very nice way.
 
I had the Akai, 1800, back in the day. It sounded good through its internal speakers, the ones in the OP pictures. Had flaps built into the cabinet that could be pulled out to direct the sound, Akai made the effort with that machine, a good commercial product.
