Found: Pioneer SX-1250

Yes, and since I was gonna sell it at a (massive) profit anyway and not keep it. I decided to send some good karma on the way of Watthour and pick it up and ship it for him. He offered a reasonable markup and that covered the costs of getting up in the morning and driving there along with any opportunity costs. So, you can congratulate him :)

Absolutely not. scarede46er did it ALL, and went well above and beyond the call. I only hope the karma can get passed forward and he is the beneficiary. The same goes to all here who put in an effort for others' benefit.

As for me, I'm stoked like a 4-8-4 steam locomotive with plutonium in the boiler. I expect it to need service, but still...

I had to make a play on this. Sadly my sister saw it going into a car trunk as she pulled into the parking lot. She also told me she intended to be there when they opened but stopped to look at Facebook as she left the house. Alas it was not meant to be. I have a great SX-1050 but would have liked to have the 1250 at a great price.

My hope is that an AKer has this and will enjoy it for years to come.

Baile - Be gentle on your sister, for she at least made an attempt on your behalf. If it's any consolation, rest assured that the unit will end up in a secure position in my rack, running on only the cleanest power, driving only capable speakers, and cared for as if I had bought it new.

As an indication, the lowly SX-450 that I bought new while working my way through school is still in my protected possession, maintained, and still operating in a safe spot in the rack. It's a bit irrational, but there is some sentimentality to it. I remember looking at the Pioneer units in the local Playback store some 30+ years ago when I bought the 450, gushing over the TOTL SX-1250 at the time thinking "if only..."

Nope, this one should be going nowhere until it's in my will.

Don't worry, I thanked her greatly. I come from a great family and we all help take care of each other. She loves the strereo hobby as well so I make sure she has nice equipment to listen to when I have extras. She is running a Spare CR-1020 of mine on indefinite loan. I think she likes the thrill of the chase as well.

You needed that SX-1250 more than I do so things worked out. Sometimes my biggest scores have come after giving away something or missing out on something else. I recently passed along a Pioneer Sa-8500 II for the $17 I had in it to my nephew and his wife to get his system going. Then out of the blue a coworker gifted me an old late 30s Philco floor stander. So it all works out. That is the audiokarma right?

+2 Don't let UPS pack it, it never is done right and the UPS store is a franchise, it doesn't mean any claim will automatically get paid.

Nice work though to provide a karma gesture :thmbsp:

Glad to hear it's going to a good home. The SX-450 is where I started out too, many many moons ago.

oh i believe it will. ups packed it themselves.:thmbsp:

Oh dear. I don't mean to worry you, but I would not have recommended that. They are just kids in uniforms, they do not know how to pack anything, especially receivers, which are always heavier on one side or corner than another. The chances they packed it properly are approximately zero. I will hope it all works out well for you guys.

This thread is another example of what makes AK so special. Really glad to hear how things were handled here. Now just crossing fingers that the unit makes it through shipment intact, for that final dose of "Karma"!

Oh Gawd. Dollars to donuts they didn't remove the tuning knob so the faceplate will be cracked for starters.

Or, it could all work out just fine. :D

Actually, although it had shifted slightly in the box (single box, mind you), and that nothing was done to otherwise prepare it for shipment, the box was large enough and contained so many peanuts that it was not harmed. The unit has the smallest of scuffs on the top of the frontal facepiece, and I'm not even going to deal with that. After a PS rebuild, regulator rebuild, both driver cards rebuilt, all new final outputs, caps, lamps, cleaning, lube, adjustment, burn-in, further adjustment, addition of heat sink to the warmer components, it has been sitting on the top shelf for almost a solid month now, eating up watts from the wall receptacle.

For those who haven't experienced a new (in 1976) or freshly upgraded (maybe even better than new?) SX-1250, it's quite impressive. I'm not certain if it's in good form to quote oneself, but:

I'm stoked like a 4-8-4 steam locomotive with plutonium in the boiler. I expect it to need service, but still...

Trust there is no exaggeration nor bias when I claim that I am not at all disappointed. Mated to the Pioneer speakers (and some original Jensen Monitors as reference) this thing is whisper quiet on the floor, actually moves the wallboard at -30dB, and is as compliant and faithful as a saint at every setting between. I can hear musicians pressing oboe keys between notes with no noise under it.

And it's a pretty old girl, too:

I know - I know... I probably sound like an ad campaign for Pioneer. If you could only hear it.

Here's to wishing that karma treats all of you as well, and that you, too, get to meet someone as selfless and pleasant as scarede46er. That may have been the most rewarding part of the entire chapter.

I can attest to the power of the 1250- paired with my 22's, I can crank it to half volume and hear it up the street with the windows closed. The term "monster" is quite fitting for these units, can't imagine a 1980.

Did you replace the 4 main caps?

Congrats! It took me a couple years to get a hold of a sx-1250 because I thought it was the receiver I had back in the day later to realize that I had a 1280. Anyway, I have both now and love them to death :) This thread is awesome, you AK peeps are very cool and I am glad you were able to make someone's day. I bet if I had been on these forums for the past few years I would have ended up with something I liked without the russian roulette of fleabay that I have been playing.

The 1250 I bought now goes in to protection mode (i think) after a few minutes of playback on certain songs. This is a subject for another thread, but the 1250 is definitely something worth rebuilding and hanging on to!

While I probably should have, I did not replace the main filters. They showed no heat damage nor leakage. They hold charge for a lot longer than I expected (don't ask me how I know, but nothing was damaged). After seeing that the fiber heat sleeves on the larger resistors hadn't even been tanned, I assumed this one had an easy life until the regulator board died and the trimmers on the pre-drivers went wonky and put it into protect. I'll likely get to those caps eventually, but it should be safe to "life test" the unit before I dive into that.

I've already probably strayed too far from the purpose of this forum, but I thought a resolution was fitting after all the interest and well-wishing it generated.
