Are there ant Zappa albums that are jazz oriented, in a avant garde style sort of way? I was just listening to a new purchase, George Russell's Jazz Workshop and I could hear bits and pieces of Zappa's style. Maybe George was an influence on Frank.

I remember there being a "Jazz From Hell" album by Zappa- but I dob't remember how jazzy it was- I seem to recall it being done on Synclavier (very advanced sampling keyboard/interface in it's day).

Finnbow is right there with his rec's.
 
I would include Uncle Meat
if you can find a good vinyl copy grab it

if you see any Eric Dolphy jazz cds grab those too

I have come across Uncle Meat three times in the last five years. It is out there if you keep looking. My copy cost 2 bucks. I have should have picked up another one at 5 bucks but I had a brain fart that day lol.

bullseye...you can pretty much choose any fz album and 90% you'll find something that has some jazz grooves..throw in apostrophe/overnite sensation...just for kicks
 
I always thought of Frank's music mixture of Jazz / classical/speed metal/country/bee bop /klezzmer/opera/baroque/and polka. And that's one bar of a song.

Venture down Mr. Zappa's rabbit hole and you'll find pretty much anything.

The CD's were done last year...maybe a little longer....

Zappa's used stuff is costly and hard to find.Although not impossible as I picked up Studio Tan / Sleep Dirt and Joe's Garage acts II and III on vinyl for 4 bucks each last week.
I picked up Over-Nite Sensation and One Size Fits All on CD's last month from blowitoutahere.com and will keep adding as time goes by.

I have really grown to love the live recording, Make a Jazz Noise Here. It is a very impressive performance that captures the wild creativity and musicianship of one of Zappa's best ensembles.
 
In response to your original comment about George Russell's small group avant garde jazz, I would recommend Zappa's "Uncle Meat" as the record that comes closest to Russell's music. :music:

Zappa's "Grand Wazoo" and "Wakka Jawaka" are great too, but I would say his arrangements on those records are closer to contemporary big bands like Don Ellis or Gil Evans, but still very distinctly Zappa.:thmbsp:
