Gaps in Advent surrounds

I recently bought 4 New Large Advents in very good shape BUT every one of the has 2 gaps in the surround. Does anyone know why this might have happened? They sound ok but the bass isn’t what it should be. I guess that’s not surprising…

Your Advents are acoustic suspension speakers. That is, they require that the cabinets be sealed in order to maintain the designed bass. Normally, the surrounds provide the seal between the cone and the driver's basket.

In OPs case, the split surrounds break the seal to the cabinet. I would bet whoever refoamed those woofers did not have the correct size, so a smaller surround was cut in half and used. Those surrounds need to be replaced with ones of the proper size.

Replacing surrounds on these Advent woofers are a relatively easy project, plenty of information available in other AK threads, such as the surrounds go on the back side of the cone. Also note that many find the glue from SimplySpeakers difficult to work with and prefer Aleene's Tacky Glue.
 
Just refoam and you'll be fine. The hardest part will be getting that new foam off.
Looks like they scratched the basket pretty good too.
Are both speakers like that ?
 
It looks to me like some knucklehead thought they sounded better with the gaps in there. Or, it was a poorly conceived "theory"..

Thats crazy. Looks down right surgical. It is the case that foam surrounds for some Advent's aren't generally available, and then you have to cut them. For example, I have a pair of Advent /2's that have a slightly smaller woofer cone than 'standard' sized Advents of that era. So I had to cut a full size foam to fit. But I cut it on the bias (think French bread!) with just a smidge of overlap. Maybe an expert can see where the seam is in the pic! (I know the hate on the /2's.. But these things sound pretty damn good! Its a pair of Advents produced in the heyday of Kloss-driven Advent. And these little guys sound the part. And I am a sucker/hoarder of early New England (Acoustic Research spawn) speakers, so I can't not have a pair of these.).

In your case, congrats on the score! You'll be super happy with those. As other posters have indicated, the Advents are fairly easy to replace the surrounds. Definitely worth the effort. And the stack the crap out of those speakers!

It's NOT from somebody trying to fit incorrect surrounds on the drivers. Correct Advent surrounds are readily available. Whoever had them cut the gaps in there on purpose for whatever wacky reason.
