Gates broadcast turntable problems

Well, I don't SEE the motor running exactly, but I can still hear it going. Now that I think about it, maybe it just stopped and was humming.

Anyways, after hours of pulling and messing, the motor just won't come apart, which is a first. Unfortunately it's best to send the unit to a professional who has whatever is needed to get this motor apart. Thank you all for your assistance.

Wow, that mechanism looks baffling on this end. How far does that spring stretch when the drive is engaged? It looks to be set for max tension, but it's in it's rest state in the pictures.

The service manual for the CB-500 is on VE. The only difference I can see is the platter size. It does at least confirm my belief that the motor cap is 2uF.

Did you check for a worn/missing thrust bearing on the bottom of the spindle? (could explain why the TT runs for a little while, then, with no bearing, the platter essentially seizes from the heat.)

Yes, that thrust bearing needs to be checked out and replaced if necessary, and the platter bearing needs to be checked for wear too.

So, I gave the turntable back to the owner a while ago out of fear of damaging it when trying to get the motor apart. He had it sent to a professional who quoted him $1500 to repair the motor, which was diagnosed as bad.

Anyways, he was going to throw it away, so guess who has a new free Gates turntable! Sometime within the next couple months or so I'm going to take some time and try to get the motor apart. Plenty questions are soon to follow, so things may get interesting...
