Genesis Model ID

Genesis speakers

Hi,

I was lucky to find apair of Genesis II's at a garage sale a few years ago, picked them up for 10 bucks for the pair, nearly flawless asthetically, needed re-foaming though so I contacted "Human Speakers" and obtained remanufactured woofers and passive radiators. The tweets were fine.
I did not do anything with the crossovers, they play exceedingly well, with deep bass and warm midrange.
You will enjoy yours for many years.

Thanks for all the info!

Based on the cabinet dimensions, the drivers used, the "10" on the serial # sticker and the seller's statement that they were model 10s, I'm pretty sure that's what they are.

I have studied the Humanspeaker site. It claims that the 10s use a 2nd order crossover with a choke and an 8uF bi-polar capacitor. However the markings on the shiny black cap used in my crossovers has the following codes: "10MFK CEO 2P BPF." The "M" appears to be in script. This seems to suggest a 10uF cap, doesn't it? The "BPF" stands for bi-polar? Both of the leads from the cap lead to connections encased inside a "solid pool" of what looks to be brown hot melt glue.

There is another component mounted on the crossover board. It is white, square shaped and has a "square hole" in the center. It looks like it is 2pieces consisting of "squared off, C-shaped" halves. These halves are mounted so that the ends of each "squared off C" touches the other. In other words, they appear to be mirror imaged. Might these be the choke? They contain no visible markings.

As I understand what has been suggested:

1. I only need to replace the caps.
2. Replacement caps must match whatever uF value the existing ones are (confirmation of values requested above).
3. I can/should increase the voltage (although the markings don't seem to suggest what was used, Human claims they are 100V).
4. I should use bi-polar caps with at least a film cap or better. Parts Express 1% caps seem to meet these requirements and be fairly cheap. Some of the "audio grade" caps cost $30 - $50/each for 400V ratings.

Thanks for bearing with my questions.

Your questions answered.
1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. The Dayton 1% caps are probably the way to go. If you want to be fancy, you can buy the Jantzen caps for a little more $, but I doubt you (or anybody else) could hear the difference.

Don't be surprised, as it was common practice for speaker manufacturers to make upgrades to crossovers as production went along to either improve them or reduce costs. Crack open a pair of Infinitys and then look at their website tech area and you'll see much the same -- the two are similar in name only. But trace out what you have and upgrade the caps and components based on what's actually there, not what the website says.
