Getting older - Did your music taste change? I think mine is starting to. why?

Hi All,

Maybe an odd question but it’s just something that i have been experiencing lately. Not sure if it's stress or if I've just played through my music that its not enjoyable. New music has interested me less lately, the music i use to love has slowly started to be overwhelming to me.

Big fan of 90's rock and alternative, classic rock, jazz, soft rock, classic rock, some 90's hip hop.

I had Good Charlotte spinning yesterday and it just felt like to much was going on, I switched it up to Matchbox 20 and liked it more, but i've noticed lately its hard for me to sit through an entire album. I paly spotify all day and its just been blah. Feels like i lost my music loving mojo....

IKD maybe im just overthinking it but some music lately has just not hit the spot. Its like i want to spin a good album, I dig and dig and cant find anything i want to listen to, switch to CD and its the same, same with cassette, the format or genera dose not seem to matter, I just feel fatigued, and not sure what it is. Either way, any of you ever experience this?

My taste has changed somewhat as I've gotten older, but only to get more restrictive. For the most part, the only new music I like is those from artists I've previously enjoyed (and only some of the time). It's very rare for me to find something new to listen to. For the most part, though, I still like almost all of the music I liked years ago, but I go through phases of listening to some artists while avoiding others, and then it changes.

I'd suggest letting it rest for a while. You sound like someone who becomes really engaged with the music, that you don't just put something on to have it playing in the background. That kind of engagement can come and go, so don't try to push it. And, if after a while, you still feel like it might be depression, talk to a doc about it, that isn't something to ignore.

System synergy is important…maybe try switching your gear & speaker placement… I lost my wonderful synergy when my Linn Wakonda preamp got destroyed…

Maybe I’ll take a break, I don’t own a TV and audio is my life. I may just need a reset for a while.

I actually switch gear often, have about 50 or so tube amps and a number of sets of speakers, stereo and mono, ikd what it is I keep switching tracks and can’t seem to land on one and just enjoy it.

My musical tastes have continually changed. It's like each phase of my life has its own genre.

It's how I am with beer: always trying something new.

AudioKarma is the only social media I am on, no face book or MySpace or any of them. Never even had an account. Ya see I grew up in a really religious home so music, and TV and the internet wasn’t allowed. I still do not own a TV, haven’t since 2002. AK is the only site I post on.

I do like beer, but I only drink on the weekends.

What is odd to me is that this feels like a sudden change for me, and it’s not been gradual. Just seems lately I can’t stand 90s alternative, or even metal or rock. I’ve actually been de selecting tracks in Spotify due to the fact I can’t seem to listen to it any more. It’s just harsh and fast and I use to be all for it but now I want to slow down and enjoy good music but my mind won’t seem to let me enjoy it. I think I’m going to go for a bike ride today maybe get some exercise in and not just sit at home and zone out to music. Just feeling off. There is more to it, won’t get into to but it’s really perplexing to me that it feels like I lost the desire yet I know I have not. I have had a lot on my mind lately, but I’d have never thought that it would affect my love for music as it has. It’s just bland and I want flavor.

I don't care for most of the music produced in the USA after 2005. IMO, it has become so commercialized that I lost interest in exploring anything new. Then, in the late 2010s, I discovered a Kazakh singer by the name of Dimash Qudaibergen. This has made me aware of a vast amount of talent across the globe and well outside the control of the US music industry. Boy, have I learn about the vast amount of incredible talent that exists outside of the American bubble. This has literally opened up a world of new music to explore for me. To showcase what I am talking about I have linked to a video of him performing a song live. I was written specifically for him by one of the one of the world's most known composers, Igor Krutoy, who came out of retirement just to write music for Dimash. The song is titled Stranger and, IMO, no other person could sing this song like Dimash does due to his extremely wide vocal range. This is just one of so many incredible performances he has done. This is the type of talent that exists in the world and the internet makes it available to everyone who cares to explore for it.

I have some theories.

1) We listen to the music that sends out the same amount of energy we are prepared to put in. So, when we are leaking testosterone and angst at 18, we have the energy for more 'energetic' music than we might when we are 65. I think there is an energy match that takes place, which can change over time.

As TPOH said, "Speaking of hearing, I can't take too much loud music; I mean I like to play it, but I sure don't like to rock it."

So, I'll hit it now and then, but not as hard as when I was a lad. ;)

2) We are not designed to hear a freaking song 10,000 times. For 99%+ of our history, music was a live or homemade phenomenon. Now, we can pop a song on our stereo and hear it every day, forever. I can hit a limit with a song and then, that's it, I don't wanna hear it any more. Keep trying that new stuff and at some point, something with re-light your fire!

If I NEVER hear "Stairway to Heaven" again, fine by me. Something fresh will catch you and match your energy and things will go from there!

3) If we are down, we definitely can become anhedonic. I don't have a good answer for that.

It's funny if I look at myself, holding a Tidal or Spotify screen up and thinking, "An infinite amount of music, and nothing to play."

You aren't too far away, if you ever hit Chio, I'll pour you a beverage and enjoy good fellowship - hanging with my audio buddies is my closest to sure fire way to get my musical mojo back!

This song is accurate for me, sometimes....

I've discovered that I don't like all music in a genre, but have developed an eclectic taste. And that what's good at one moment, might not be in another. That tunes have good and bad sections. Can't stand silence. Interesting music going on currently in the 2026 world skating championship pairs.

Interesting, I actually never considered looking at world music, I need to expand my search! Great info, maybe I can find some new artist that I actually like and don’t just “rap” I’ve also been hating modern rap music. It’s been nothing but trash and filth.
