"God" particle discovered???

Interesting indeed the Higgs boson, but what it implies: :dunno:

Something ado about mass I'm led to believe, but a good explanation is welcome!

IT'S THE PARTICLE WHICH MAKES GOOD AUDIO AMPLIFIERS HEAVIER ,ever let the magic smoke out of an amp? that's the initial god particle escaping!-the rest ooooze out over time.

I think it's an amazing discovery. It should lead to an even deeper undestanding of our existence.

This is an amazing discovery, and a remarkable confirmation of the power of mathematics to describe our universe.

Their math gets so whacked it is incomprehensible to me. Do you know if the Higgs Boson is part of the 11th/12th order string theory debate or is that a different camp altogether?

Meh. I Googled it. It appears that physicists disagree over the answer to that question, too.

What I wonder is what will they do with the information? In other words what are practical applications?

I would agree though when reading some of the theories that "invent" a new math to fit the proposed theory I sometimes scratch my head. I know there is precedent for it and this field often has the math way ahead of the observational confirmation. But then again I majored in English........ :D

Why do anything with it? Sometimes the whole point is in understanding it all. It would certainly answer some questions.

This stuff is SO way beyond me its not even funny...Wasn't it Einstein who said unless you could describe it so a 10-yr-old kid could understand it, it prolly wasn't any good ? Well, meet yer 10 Year Old Kid...(grin)

Discovery usually leads to invention in the strangest ways. Who knows what advancements will come out of this discovery or the pursuit of this discovery.

Though I wish they didn't call it the "god" particle, it's going to cause so many meaningless arguments and only aids in confusing people. :/

A profitable area of mathematics is called game theory. In the beginning it was fun because it modeled human behavior.

In the end it is becoming as lame as a fire that escaped a burn ring. The practical application turned out to be hassling each other.

how did they discover something that already had a name ?
and god particle eh ? that's just silly god is bigger than that .

They are being fairly cautious about it, but it seems that it is a great break through. It is a sub atomic particle that allows mass to be created, with out it no atoms. Which means there would be no suns, planets etc. Pretty cool. The God Particle name sucks though. It was a theroy proposed by a guy in the sixty's.

Just read the story today. Supposedly Dr. Higgs originally called it the "goddamn particle" because it was so difficult to find.

It seems that serious physicists do not use that term.

It's something that got started by Leon Lederman's book, The God Particle: If the Universe Is the Answer, What Is the Question?. Since it's a catchy name, it stuck and has been endlessly used by the talking heads on tv. Not much more to it than that.

And now it's being used as "proof" of god and "proof" of the non-existence of god at the same time. :/
