Goliath II sub sounds "gravelly"

I have a Goliath II sub that sounds gravelly or scratchy.
It has been re foamed but I don't think it has been re capped.
Is it just a bad foam job or would some new caps clean up the audio?
Or is the driver toast?

You can check for voice coil rub by gently pressing on the center of cone around the dust cap. It should move in and out smoothly without making any noise. Also check to make sure the woofer's movement is not constrained by the new foam (that is, it should be able to move in and out the same distance).

Check on those and report back. You can also bypass the caps temporarily (to see if they're the problem) by connecting your amp's output directly to the woofer terminals. I'm assuming it's a dual voice coil woofer, so connect the coils in series (make sure you get the polarity correct) first before connecting the amp. Don't attempt to connect your satellites at the same time, just listen to the woofer by itself.

The voice coil is rubbing. I thought i checked it before. I will take a closer look tomorrow.

I was able to "de-glue" the surround. Got it re-centered and it sounds much better. Now I think it's time for a recap. Should be fairly easy. Lots of room in there.
