Good computer speakers for music?

I use RS Nova 6's. A bit large, but they look nice on my desk. They are about the same size as KLH 17's, but the 17's are 6" taller and not quite as deep.
 
I don't know about the rest of you, but when someone says they need "computer speakers", I assume they have no amp. Consequently, they are looking for a totally powered system like:

Powered system

Now, if our friend has an amp then an inexpensive decent choice would be something like:

semi powered system (sub is powered)

Neither of these will "break the bank".

do the model sixes really need a sub ? and were they not just on sale for $99 ? i would like to check them out .

YES, the model 6's are still on sale for $99 a pair.

On whether they really need a sub depends upon the type of music you like. The 6's are rated to 50Hz, but they don't say how much they are down at 50Hz. Then it's an 8 inch not a 10 inch woofer.

If vast major of your music consists of bass guitar, my guess is the 6's would be fine alone. If you listen to jazz or classical where the big double basses are used, you might fine the sub a useful add on.

By the way that ensemble price is $30 lower than the sub + $99 model 6's.

JBL Media 3.....Ring Any Bells?

I was gonna start a new thread, found this one in search, so here goes....

About 3 yrs ago I found these JBL Media 3 computer speakers at a resale for under 10. Very clean,but the knob trolls had absconded with the teensy little pot-turners. MAN...I'm so frustrated....NO Pics....AARRGHHHH.

Sorry, gang...anyway, these are the same size & shape as the JBL Control line of mini speakers.....a little bigger than Minimus 7s.. in the usual off-white, bone-colored, standard computer color scheme. Nice one-square-inch logo/ nameplate in......ORANGE!!!! Mega-cool! I spotted this distinctive color and ran past three aisles in the store to grab 'em!

JBL website has a horrid copy of the one page fold-out instruction guide..... I think 6W per channel thru a 3/4" tweet and 4" woof(har!).also has a sub out on the back.

I have just now pulled these out of storage and put them to work on my PC. Currently pairing them with an Altec Lansing sub, it's a weird shaped ACS 160 unit-6" driver front-mounted, oval molded port. Rated at 120W power draw, so its got some juice getting to the speaker,not sure what the output wattage rating is, or if it's even a meaningful number.....actually sounds pretty boomy, one-note bass at times....gotta keep a tight rein on the controls...the sub has a vol control, and the JBLs have a Bass knob, so some juggling can produce a satisfying output.

However, having said that, I can say I'm pretty happy with this rig... I'm in an apartment, so for the near-field environment at my PC station I can create a little sonic bubble for late-nite sessions (like now).

Anybody got these, heard 'em, heard OF them.....Bottom Line...I'm just a JBL Junkie!!!!................willhowl:D
 
After lightening took out the logitech 560s I just used some leftover parts. Infinity rs4b's with nad 1600 pre and 2600 amp. I haven't heard better. Around here on a computer anyway.
