Good computer speakers for music?

Do you guys have any computer speakers that you like? I want something mainly for music , not video games. I've tried several cheap pairs and been disappointed.

Also it would preferably be something that looked decent. I've heard the "Soundsticks" are good, but they have such an outdated design; they were trendy in what, 2001?

AudioEngine has gotten lots of good reviews. Two models, and both seem to be great for what they are.

I think I spotted the smaller model in a iPhone comercial yesterday.....so how is that for trendy?
 
If you can find a used pair of Monsoon computer speakers they work awesome and folks simply love them.

The Monsoon line is hardly outdated. Unless of course you think Maggies are a POS. Same concept. For near field music on your computer the MM1000/700 or later versions are very nice. I have 3 set ups and will never look back.
 
Seconded on the Realistic Minimus-7 and Sonic Impact T-Amp.

Or if you find them, Realistic Minimus-12's....I use those as my main monitors when I mix and master a recording.
 
I guess it would help to know the expectations.

Is this meant to be a main system, or mostly casual/incidental listening?

I didn't really get into listening to music from computer until recently. I've gone through a couple sets of computer speakers. Nothing expensive. Latest was an Altec system with sub plus desktop speakers. Nothing ever really sounded good enough pay attention. I figured it was a lousy sound card as much as anything. Then on a whim I pulled an amp board out of a discarded cheap comp speaker set and wired up some connectors to connect a pair of Minimus 7. The amp board is probably crap to start with and putting out only a few watts...and I have no idea if impedance is even close to matching... but it was a night and day difference in sound quality. Near field imaging seems very good. They may not go down as low as a sep sub but at least the bass is listenable. The bass was boomy and muddy in the altec sub. They have me thinking about finding a better amp for these guys.

edit: oh this is a work desk primarily used that way. I don't have a hi-fi system set up in the area. I wanted something that sounded ok that wouldn't add too much clutter.

I have a pair of Optimus 7 Pro AVs here, which I hooked up with a JBL Control Sub5 using an Accurian amp; that made quite a nice system for music. If Paul C says they need a sub, they need a sub.... :yes:

that's hilarious, i'm using a hong kong knock off impact t-amp (ta-2024) to run my minimus 7's!!!!! have you done any upgrades to the 7's? i did the crossover mod.

as far as bass goes, the M7's have great bass, really tight and deep for it's size, if you want lower bass get any old sub.... i'd say whatever was cheapest on craigslist at the time:music:

I don't have the 7's, but have heard them....I have the 12's....and I run those usually from a Sony TA-1055.

Audio Engine 5s.
 
I'm very pleased with my Klipsch ProMedia system. At work, I am using the Logitech Z-2300 which also sounds good, after I played with the placement a little.

More and better bass than Bose cubes, certainly, considering THEIR size. ;)
