AK Design Collaborative - Insignia-Class Economy Speakers (a.k.a Indignia)

You'll have to talk to Dave (dnewma04) about a group buy. However, the first wave is over and another will probably depend on interest and will definitely depend on Dave's willingness to do it again.

There is a parts list somewhere that you can follow and order everything on your own.

Am I understanding this correctly?
The cabinet design is 8"x14"x10.5" (exterior)
If you're using 3/4" MDF, that leaves 6.5"x12.5"x9" (interior)
If I'm doing my math correctly, that works out to be .42 cubit feet, interior, not .38
Am I missing something here? Does this matter?

What's the advantage to getting PE's baffle, rather than cutting your own?

Did you take into account the volume of the woofer and port? Those have to be subtracted as they're not acoustic volume inside the box.

Yup, no holes. The advantage is that it is made to fit on their enclosures. It has a rabbet cutout and rounded edges and the mounting holes are already there. The drawings are available here.

Indignia namer revealed!(to me at least)

After skimming thru this thread for a while, I decided to track down where the monicker "Indignia" first surfaced.(aahh-oogah!) I wished to figure out who christened this project's product. Well, I should have known.

Forgive me if I'm retreading covered ground, but I found the answer....and I SHOULD have known.... the mighty Zilchster himself...of course,of course....

In Post# 166 of this thread, dated 04-28-08, the term "Indignia" first appears...

This is really a great undertaking, glad to see so many AK'ers enjoying it so much.......willhowl:D

Hello, folks. I've decided to not just hang around and haunt the forum until Zilch pronounces the KLH-17 mods fit to run with. I'm going to use the time creatively and build at least one set of Indignias. How I love that name! I'm jealous of all the good stuff going on here.

Ordered a set of xover masks from Jack & am proceeding to order parts. I believe I'll do better with a minimum of woodworking, so I'll build the first one (at least) with a pair of PE cabs.

Stand by for questions! :D

Consider sending your PE baffles, once you receive them, to Dave (dnewma04) for milling. Contact him via PM for details. I believe he said he'd be stocking some finished ones, so the turnaround can be efficiently accomplished.

Have them both hooked up to my tube system know. I am amazed at how good these little monitors sound. The bass extension is unbelievable for a speaker this size (internal volume ~0.58 ft3). Highly recommend this DIY project. You will have some speakers that sound as good as ones that cost much more.

Slightly larger cabs than Indignia standard; we've discussed that in some earlier posts here.

Next size up PE cabs, 0.5 cuft., yield a bit deeper bass, but lower power-handling capacity.... :thmbsp:
 
Nice looking speakers ^. Red was my second choice for my cabs.

Perhaps I missed this in the previous 654 posts, but has there been any indication of what the power handling capability is for Indignias?

Also, while they seem to mate very well with pretty much anything I've driven them with (including Snade's Pilot and my old MA230 - integrated tube amps), I've noticed they even sound great with my 25W Accurian integrated. Lately though, I've been enjoying them in a very near field configuration on my small triangular shaped desk with an unassuming 30W Sherwood S-7200 receiver (thanks again JohnVF). Usually my source is a local college station (WDCB in Glen Ellyn) that plays great jazz and doesn't seem to use the compression that otherwise fills the Chicago FM dial. Indignias sound really good, rich and powerful driven by the Sherwood with a good source. While Indignias are known for their surprising bass, the mids are remarkable too.

Any other synergistic combos from anyone with a pair?

The Boxes came, gloss black cabs are really nice and in perfect condition.
Like the others, I'm missing the large coil too. I'm sure they'll be along shortly.

Inspection of parts, 2 small problems

Going through the parts, everything is nice, the gloss black cabinets are way nicer than I had anticipated. Like others, I am missing the large coil, and one of the woofers has a bent edge on the frame. Now to get those face plates to Dave!:thmbsp:

Wow! I was going to make my Indignias with the cherry, but those black cabs do look nice! Nasty for fingerprints and dust, though, I bet. Hmmmm :scratch2:

The outer mounting surface on those woofers is kind of flimsy. I dimpled one with a little oomph on the screwdriver while mounting it. Be careful out there.

The PE cabs are gorgeous, and I see several companies using them for their commercial products lately. The baffles on mine were quite snug.

With a lot of patience, gentle persuasion with the wide, beveled edge my painters' 5-in-1 tool and a soft cloth evenly around the perimeter ultimately prevailed without marring the finish. The four screws have to come out first, of course.

I'm now thinking that lightly tapping on a rod in through the binding post holes on the rear might assist with this, but I never tried it myself.... :dunno:
