Good news for Kenwood owners

Many receivers have a problem with a power switch piggy backed on the speaker switch.

It is for the most part unobtanium unless someone has some NOS. You can tell it is bad if the unit makes a sparking noise and the display dims when it turns on.

Well I have a service manual for the KR4070 and in the back were 2 service bulletins giving the part number. I went one better- you can remove the switch without removing the speaker switch, and you can rebuild it AND convert it to DPST for reliability.

Affected models (there might be others) are: KR-2090, 3090, 4070, 5030, 6030 and the 2010, 3010, 4010, 5010, 6050 series.

PM me if interested and I will put together a step guide, mebbe with a photo or two as I have another to fix later this week.

I'd say put it all together with pics and instructions and convert it into a handy pdf document.

Wow, quaddriver, i'd be ever grateful. My poor little KR-5010 needs a power switch repair, but I cannot seem to get the bugger out.

Usually, the gray plastic power switch is attached to the back of the wafer-type speaker selector switch via two mounting shafts with two hexnuts.

In some variants of the switch, there are FOUR contacts on the gray switch, two used (and dead) and two unused and thus available for fresh hookup. Where there are only two contacts and the switch is crackling and arcing as usual, I've gone inside a few times, but not successfully.

I don't believe that severely carbonized contacts can be successfully repaired, but if you have some special trick, please share!

I'd really like to see that. I've had a lot of luck getting 4070s for little or nothing because of this issue. I've had good results cleaning them, but this would be a sure fire cure.

I can write in word and HTML - but how do you pdf convert? If I put this together could I send it to someone to post here?

4070 owners unite! I think they are Kenwood's answer to the ubitiquous SX-780 Pioneer

You need Adobe Acrobat, not just the reader to convert to PDF. If you email me the document, I can convert it for you.

For easy and free PDF creation, I'd suggest downloading either CutePDF or PrimoPDF. Online, you can upload most any MS Office document type to www.pdfonline.com and have a .pdf version of it emailed back to you. Looking forward to your guide...

ack!...people actually use OpenOffice?! I help test/create the documentation for that suite of apps.

Yes... it is a free alternative to MS Office, and it works!

I prefer not to make Bill Gates any wealthier than he already is.

Mr. Longworth,

Have you seen the varient that has the grey switch clamped into a metal cage with no way to remove it?
Mine is like that, it cannot be pulled from the back, you'd have to split the cage to get it out, which would be a big PITA.

Do you have any idea on howto work on this version?

Yessir, my fix works on EXACTLY that type. Its easy as pie (is is that 'Pi'?)

I had her uncaged, apart and clean in <5 minutes. Now you guys are FORCING me to bring out the other misbehaving 4070 and the digicam...

btw - I have only recently become aware that O-O is stable on windoze....used it for years on my linux builds, never even tried pdf generation..I'll give it a whirl hopefully by the end of this week.

Yes!
It's the only office suite I'll let into my house, and I've got most of my family hooked on it too. It's a really really nice set of programs, though I admittedly use Writer and Calc amost exclusively, and some formatting does not happily transfer from OOO to MSWord.

Sorry for Off Topic.

I've got a 6050 so I'm interested. :thmbsp:

OO is on my desktop. I've tried to get others interested, but so far not much luck.

did the other unit a few ago...again it was 5 minutes to have it out and apart, 20 minutes total job. took lots of pics. willwrite it up tomorrow evening and send it off. Im tired.
