Goodmans One Ten

Hi forum, I've just signed up. I do a lot of restoration of old hifi gear. I probably should have signed up ages ago. But nevertheless I like the look of this forum and hope to contribute and gain from the experience. I have just completed restoration of a Goodmans One Ten that I bought for small money as a non runner. A shovel full of capacitors later and the thing is running. The only problem remaining is to deal with the input switches. There are ten of them in a row and about six are interconnected. I've blasted them with switch cleaner up their rear ends while rocking them back and forth. It helped but they're not right yet. I would appreciate any tips that would avoid my having to de-solder ten switches. Thanks in advance. Doug.

OK I got the switches out. It looks like there's no possibility to open them up. I'm going to soak them in degrease and then in isopropyl and then in coke. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for your wishes. The switches are currently soaking in paraffin. I'll take them out tomorrow and soak them in isopropyl. I may then soak them in Coca-Cola depending on the resistance values I get. Coca-Cola has wonderful properties apart from fixing hangovers.

Hi y'all, all solvents proved useless. I figured out how to disassemble the switches. There are spring metal contacts that connect adjacent pins. They were covered in a kind of lacquer. I think the previous owner was a heavy smoker. I cleaned the springs with 1500 grit paper and the even that was a difficult task because of the level of the contamination. I cleaned the pins with a small square file. All switches are now showing 0.2ohms. Happy days. I'll update when the switches are installed.

Switches installed. No more crackles. It's working perfectly. I'm picking up fm, am, and all inputs and switching between them perfectly. This thing is a hidden gem. The sound quality is amazing and there's loads of power. Good result.

Well-look-a-here! Another One Ten restorer 2020! Congrats on the buy and result. These certainly are special units. Bummer I missed checking this part of the forum until now. This fall I also worked on and got my Goodmans One Ten up and running . In my case the culprit was a bad transistor in the psu. Also had to replace the FM-meter.

My One Ten works fine but I find the sound quality a bit veiled/dull. So I probably need to move on to replace more components. Just not have mustered the courage and time for it just yet.

@Doug_R : When you worked on yours, did you find any specific component swapping improving on sound quality? Of course asking to see if I can get away with just a partial upgrade . By the way, I have of course replaced the big reservoir caps.

That's a very unique looking unit, I love the look. Good job on the switches but please don't use Coke as a cleaning fluid. You'd be surprised by how many things I've had to fix after an encounter will a mis-handled Rum and Coke.
