Got my ADS L-620's Back

Funny thing about ADs speakers- the L620s seem liked in this thread, other folk have said they were not the favorites among the ADS staff.

I like my L570 IIs, and a collector in NYC likes this two way ADS the best, but have been told the L4xx series is a better speaker by others.

I enjoy my ADS L630s very much, which has a single 10" woofer, similar to the L730s and later L880s, and may prefer the 10" woofer over the twin-woofer L810s after recently hearing them.

Funny thing, this fickle vintage speaker orgy.

One thing we can all agree on however, is that the ADS speaker line is a good one.

Agreed, the ADS I've heard and owned are excellent. My preference is like splitting hairs. Of the three I own, the L620 and L470 are two ways and the L780 are three way. I prefer the L620 and L470 over the L780 but that doesn't mean two way ADS are better than three ways. I've heard Duffinator's L810's but I haven't spent quality time with 'em so I can't say for sure. However, most everyone loves the L810 and I look forward to getting a pair.

On a side note, the seller said my new to me L470's were in storage. I've been playing them all evening and they are getting better and better. I've noticed this before. Exercising speakers seems to "clear the throat" and open up the sound. Anyone know why?

Sam, did you see my thread on the 810 stands? While I was joking that they sound better over the previous stands I was using the 810's look mighty fine on their proper throne's. :yes:

I've noticed this too. but...

can't decide if it's:

1) psychosomatic, and just my brain, my ears getting acclimated, adjusting to the sound, or

2) The surrounds becoming a bit more pliable, after sitting inactive after years- not the same material, but a leather jacket taken out of storage is stiff- wasn't that way when you stored it. wear it a bit, and it loosens up.

3) Caps re-vitalize. I've been told this isn't possible- or if it is, it takes all of 2 to 3 seconds for them to come back to life.

I'd put my vote with number 1 or 2...

...OP, are the Large Advents larger than the 710's?

The large Advents are about 30% bigger and they are 2-ways. If you get a chance take a listen. I think you would be pleasantly surprised.

L810s, L880s, L730s, L630s are all the same size- and similar to the Large advents- and much closer in size than the L4xx/L5xx series.

Also, the L710s are smaller than the L810s, L880s, L730s, and L630s. I imagine the L780s are close to the L710s. anyone refute/deny this guess?

I got L630s and L570 IIs, and Large Advents. just for reference.

I'd agree with your size comparisons. The L780s are a little bit broader than the L710s. The L570s are a little bit shorter and the L620s were the biggest out of my bunch and about the same as the Advents.

I did see them, some nice work there. I'd love to pattern them and make some of my own...

I think the high build quality of the speakers, especially the butyl rubber surrounds, makes that an easy thing to do.
