found them at goodwill together for $12. ea.
they have been previously refoamed, the dustcap has been replaced on the main woofer.

im going to listen to them asap. wanting to know how these sound..
i have a pair of poor condition CS-922 speakers but those are bigger and the drivers have been through hell.

any opinions on these particular speakers..

what might i expect from them...

right now im useing realistic mach2 speakers and large advents.

When I was in the army (1981-82)in Germany these were the big Pioneers at that time.A couple of guys had them and I liked them at the time.Like other early 80s Pioneer gear they are not that common.I haven't seen a pair since.I'd like to hear some now to see what I think. For $12 each I think you got a deal.

didnt get a chance to give them a listen last night.. about to leave for work right now.. il have to put it off untill i come home tonight... :C
from your reactions i guess these arent too special..
if they dont sound good il probably try and flip them or give them to a friend who doesent have speakers.

Don't fret until you've heard them. They look very cool and if you do flip them, you'll make your money back several times over...

If they turn out to not be your liking I'm sure they would be a very easy flip.I'd like to see how they compare to the Mach 2.

I got one of them hooked up where my right advent usually sits and have been comparing the differences.
First thing i noticed, they are more efficient than the NLA's.
I also notice they are brighter than the advents. they have more highs and possibly upper mids.
when lowrange sounds are playing by themselves i can hear the midrange driver making noise. as if its trying to make the bass too. not sure if this should be taken as a indication of poor design or if it just needs a recap or if the midrange driver has a problem like vc rub.
but il look into that more tomorrow and will try out the other pioneer speaker at the same time. maybe this one wont fair as good as the one i havent listened to yet.

another thing i noticed, when sounds are playing on my advents it seems easy to pick them out and distinguish them and exactially how they sound... with the pioneers the sounds are hard to distinguish. it seems very mixed.. im having a hard time describing what im hearing.
i dont know if this is imaging or a effect from there being too many drivers trying to make the same sounds..
but at this point i think im starting to gain more respect for the advents.
I havent ever really compared them side by side versus another speaker with similar size. they have always had to battle speakers with much bigger drivers. actually the driver in the pioneers is a bit bigger than the advents still. but the cab size is about the same.

In the pioneer's defence. The Advents have been recaped already with dayton poly film caps. and the pioneers are still origional afaik.

This is not quite a even fight yet. i have to make more room to compare both pioneers next to both advents and actually give them some volume to work with. its late right now and i have to be carefull with my volume knob.

tomorrow i only work a short 4 hour shift so i should have pleanty of time to give these pioneers a better listen..
If they dont impress me they will still get a new home, just not in my man cave but sombody else's home.
I have a buddy who likes music but yet has no stereo system in his home what so ever and i feel like i should find him something. i just need to come up with a reciever for him.

I owned a set of these while stationed in Germany in '79 - '81. Bought them at the PX with a SXD-5000 (?) Pioneer receiver and I loved them. They were a great bang for the buck speaker and were (to me) better balanced than their big brother CS-922s. The 15" woofer in the 922s is a little too 'boomy' for me ( I currently have 922s in my garage system) but I tame it down with the bass control. I would certainly keep them if I were you, but it all boils down to what you like, which sounds better to you. PM me if you want to get rid of them, I travel to St. Louis often.

well i have been listening to them for the last few days.. i think my advents are definetly a step above these pioneers...

They dont image well.. you have to be far away from them for it to sound right..
I cant really pinpoint where the sound is comming from, and it kinda makes it hard to be sure what you are really hearing.

the bass is alright, there is pleanty of midrange and high's.
i would say these are pretty flat. which is good.

but on both speakers, the midrange woofers also try to play the bass notes that the main woofer should be doing only.

I think these speakers would sound better in a very large room. where they might be able to image better.

I think il try and flip these.
i have another pair of speakers for my buddy who doesent have speakers. i just need to find him a reciever. :thmbsp:

when i say muddiness im usually trying to explain what im hearing in the bass, i dont think the bass was what i was hearing that was bothering me..

i dont want to sound like a idiot and say something impossible,,, but it was almost like some sounds were not happening at the right times.
lots of tones sounded mixed, and hard to make out.

now im wondering if maybe the midranges were wired out of phase or if they were damaged or replaced with some white van look alikes or something like that.

idk, they are gone now, so i probably wont ever hear them again, but they didnt sound at all like the cs 922 speakers i have.
which are just bigger, same number of drivers and in same positions.
with the 922 speakers it sounds like its all comming from the same place, and its pretty clear, and the 922's were far from acceptable condition.

im thinking there was something definetly wrong with them.
